Mr. Dawg -- Some good news and some bad news...

Post by TheSkeptic »

We woke up to a bloody bed this morning. Couldn't find anything on any of the dogs vis a vis injuries or bites or whatever. Mr. Dawg sneezed in the kitchen and sprayed the floor with blood. Off we go to the vet.

Dr. Catherine Garon examined him. She loves Mr. Dawg always treats him when he comes in.

Exam results: General Health Excellent -- The weight reduction program is working well, he has lost 20 pounds since the last vet visit. Looks like less because the skin has not shrunk to fit his body yet. Heartworm and parasite free. Skin good. Ears need some treatment (Normal for him.)
He has unilatiral bloody discharge from the left nostril. Diagnosis of the cause pending results of blood work and other tests. Posibilitities from most likely to least likely.

A: Fungal infection, a repeat of one he had 7 years ago. Very difficult and expensive to treat. (Expect bill to run over $1000, which we do not have right now.)

B: Foriegn body lodged in tubercle of nostril causing abcess and bleeding. Due to the complexity of the dog's nose this may be difficult to locate and may require the removal of all tubercles of nose to clear out. Mr. Dawg would lose all sense of smell in that nostril.

C: Cancer of nose. I don't even want to think of this.

Skeptic, I'm so sorry to hear this! He looks like such a good dog, and I know how much you love him! I hope hope hope it's none of the above! Especially the cancer, but that object stuck and having it removed sure would be tough! But that's great on his other things, like the weight loss. As someone who is not successful at sticking to the program well, congratulations!

Oh dear... I came back on the board before early bed [appt with people doc tomorrow and want to be the most rested looking little old woman in the waiting room 8) ] to post about your recent pics - they are excellent as always - and now here's this frightening thing about Mr. Dawg. Like Mary says, hope hope hope everything's okay. I recall that in humans a tiny, tiny blood vessel can break in the nose and cause a lot of bleeding which turns out to be a harmless situation... can't remember though which kid or grandkid took me through this. Since Mr. Dawg checks out so well in other respects, mightn't it be something like that? My dog and my cat have had more sneezes than usual with this Gulf Coast weather constantly switching back and forth. I will keep thinking positive thoughts!

:( Man, oh man, oh man - when it rains it pours! Skeptic, I swear you'd have no luck at all if it weren't for the bad luck you've had over the past few months. You'd think your vet would give you a discount with all the business you bring.

My first thought was something up his nose, but since he has a history of fungal infection, that's certainly likely. How can they tell what it is? Xray, biopsy?

Hope all turns out OK. That weight-loss doesn't sound like a good sign though unless it was intensional. Good luck!!

I hope that you hear some encouraging news from the vet. These last few months have been difficult for you, to say the least.
Let us know when you hear the results. In the meantime, I'm saying a few doggie prayers for Mr. Dawg and hoping that everything will turn out favorably.

Skeptic, any news on the bloodwork yet? Did they take a swab for cytology at least ? (least invasive, may be inconclusive, but worth a shot)
