Bully sticks???

Post by frawri »

HI group, I am looking at trying some chews that my dogs can have. I have heard a lot of good and bad about rawhides. Some one told me about Bully Sticks. They are supposed to be the muscle of a cow rather then the skin like rawhides. I just want to know, do you still have the same problems with dogs swallowing them to fast and causing injury to either their esophagus, or their intestines. I have two chi's, and they surprisingly can chew up big bones I give them. So I have stopped that, I don't want them getting any sharp points into their tummies. I need something they can chew for chewing sake. I only give them these things when I am around to watch over them. So no worries there. Also what about pig’s ears, doesn't that cause the same problems as beef rawhides do?

LOL...thank you Traci for posting that. I have been mulling a response over for several hours..I know what they are...they may not be bad, but the idea....muscle meat... :

Pigs ears are high in fat, and I would be careful of them.

People eat Rocky Mountain oysters too, but for whatever purpose, I have yet to understand.

For those who don't know what Rocky Mountain oysters are, they are testes from a bull.

OK now that does sound gross. LOL But ya know, my dogs eat each others poo, so I can't say that bully sticks are any worse. In fact I would say their better. LOL

Well, they call the testicles from sheep- mountain oysters, and I have a few friends that take them all when we have the lambs sold at the abbatoir. For people, not their dogs.

BAkc to bully sticks. :) I give one to Mick every once in awhile. Just to be on the safe side, I only let him have one for no more than a half hour, then I put it away for the next time. But that's because Mick's digestive system has gotten a little touchy with age (he's almost 15 1/2).

I don't know if its true about bull sticks especially since some are "smoked". The store I used to work for tested positive with Salmonella from the greasy pigs ears. I quit buying them for our dogs long ago.

The pig ears were sold individually and unwrapped. Our second store director insisted that we had to bag pig ears to make them look "special" at our registars. We bagged 10 to a bag, then stapled a folded paper with a special price. He claimed they sold better. We weren't allowed to clean our hands after bagging them so everything we touched was contaminated that included things we bagged for customers. It was a nasty mess. I used to try to keep paper towels under the counter to try to wipe off some of the excess grease. The store sold pig ears that were already wrapped. I guess that was his way of getting the unwrapped ones sold.
