My 10 year old male Burmese is in the early stages of CRF. The vet has ordered hydration therapy, which included 100 ml(?) of ringers solultion 1 tid on 7/29, 7/30 & today. These were administered by a vet tech. After yesterday morning's treatment, he began shaking his head frequently & his ears are in a laid down position. He has become reclusive. This is not normal behavior for him. Having never gone through this before, should I disturb my vet on a Sunday - or is this normal?
Thank you for any help you can offer.
Subcutaneous fluid therapy question...
Re: Subcutaneous fluid therapy question...
Did you give the fluids at any time, and if so, did you miss with the needle more than once? According to your post, the Rx says fluids 3 times a day, are you taking your dog in daily, or are you giving the fluids at home?
I would suspect your dog is irritated by the needle, or that fluids leaked out of the needle area and the "draining" feeling of fluids against his fur and skin are causing the head shaking, and if the needle was inserted too deep, the underlying tissue could be painful.
His withdrawal could be a combination of fear of fluids administration (discomfort), and stress from the vet visits, but if you can't determine either and are concerned, then give your vet a call.
