Allergies?

Post by CrystalsMom »

Before I boarded Crystal at the vet's last week, I noticed she had some sticky mucus collecting in her nose overnight. While away on vacation, I inquired by phone how she was doing and they said she was fine. When I picked her up from the vet's she seemed much better.
Now that she's home, she once again appears to collect mucus in her nose overnight. She has no other symptoms and her demeanor is totally normal. Her nose isn't running or anything....but in the morning has mucus in it.
The vet's office has no trees and concrete runs for the dogs. My yard has grass and trees. I have a dog who constantly sticks her nose into the lawn and vacuums everything up.
I fear bringing her back into the vet because she's been on antibiotics twice already in the last 10 months.
She's been on Benadryl capsules for the past 2 weeks due to allergies.

Is it cold at night where you live? Does she sleep in a drafty spot?

I think the Benadryl helps with the itchy paws. She hasn't been licking them at all lately.
I could try increasing the Benadryl. Right now, she's on a 25 mg capsule twice a day............but she's 88 lbs. and could probably use another tablet in the middle of the day.
She was fine until my stupid trees started to bud and the grass is being mowed weekly.

that is a pretty low dose of benadryl for a dog that size...how bout asking your vet about TID, rather than BID . an increase might help, at least it will do no harm.
and Trees czn not be stupid, the worst they acan be is inconsiderate at certain times of the year...like now---But they were here long before you were here so they maybe be saying nasty things about you....go out late at night and listen to them talking, you may be surprised at what they are saying....but again ask about a third capsule a day

Hee hee!!
I'm going to call the vet and ask him.........I think he already told me last time that I can give her up to 3 capsules a day for her itchy paws.
Prior to the trees blooming, even one capsule a day made a difference. When spring sprung, she seems to have become more allergic than ever.

She's a big junkyard looking dog but her immune system isn't really the greatest. You'd never know it by looking at her.

If it persists, ask your vet to at least do a swab on the nasal exudate.

Yes, I have a feeling I'll end up at the vets by Saturday. During the day she seems fine and you would really have to inspect her to find these subtle symptoms.
In the morning though she wakes up with a sticky collection of mucus. Crystal always has something going on with her. She definitely has allergies. I seem to get to the bottom of one thing and then another pops up. Her paws/ears/chin improved when I switched to a corn free kibble, but now I have this new thing going on.

Regardless of allergies, you'd want to rule out bacterial infection or even a foreign body obstruction, such as a grass seed, etc.

Oh boy.........as soon as I read your post I was sure she had a grass seed in her nostril. My gardener came and seeded the lawn on 4/8 and I noticed her nose running on 4/21. She spends the entire time in the yard snorting the grass.
I noticed that this morning she didn't have very much accumulated in her nose and it appears to be much better. I am going to give it until tomorrow morning and see if it's totally gone. She did have the mucus in both nostrils...but there is a very good chance she could snort up a grass seed.
She really missed her calling in life. This dog needs a job sniffing for bombs and cocaine in the NYC airports. Scent is what makes her world go 'round.
