I have never really had a dog first aid kit, other than when I had our Great Dane, I did make an emergency bloat kit...and I only did that because I felt confident enough to do it in a real emergency...and that is only because I am also an EMT, and I figure if I could intubate a person, I could do my dog if I had to...

When I was a ranchhand, we kept a first aid kit for the horses...and I remember in that were the old fashioned maxipads taht you had to use a belt with!! They were great for leg injuries and we could wrap them around and tie them off!! Of course, these days you cannot keep a maxipad in a first aid kit for major injuries, because the new improved ones are made to draw the liquid down into it to keep the surface dry, which would keep drawing blood from the injury and not allow it to clot as easily...

anoather stuped idea i got into...years ago i developed a pet first aid kit...I called it a PRE-VET KIT made up about a hundred of them and sent them out to my clients to see if they thought that they thought they were a good idea...I contained. Thermometrs, bandages, anti biotic ointment, four different medication including anti spasmotics (Lometol) Charcoal tablets, paommedication , forgot the rest pof the stuff...After i had the design on the cover made, the pills sent out and the test marketing...I got a nice letter from the FDA (food and drug assn) that Lomatol was classified as a certain grade narcotic and i should cease and desist which i did but i think the concept was good but i lost interest in it...There are lots on the market now and, even though I havn't checked them out i think they all have merits and are good ideas....mine was too early and flawed...

My suggestion: First Aid kit. (scroll to bottom of page)

I would suggest you gather your own supplies, because you will know the quality of the items and expiration dates (i.e., saline, topical antibiotic, etc), and most of these items can be purchased at your local pharmacy, reasonably priced. Find or buy a sturdy nylon duffle bag to contain the items.

You know, even tho I have a first aid kit for Mick, I don't carry it in the car every day. We do, however, have human first aid kits in both vehicles. They pretty much have the same things in them. When we travel, tho, I put Mick's in the car, as well.
