Safe Tranquilizers?

Post by Tambrey »

Our poor Beagle, Oliver, is tottally going nuts...he hates any kind of bright lights, even to that I cannot have hanging things on my porch, or sunlight reflecting off of magazines on a table...
Well, we have had nonstop thunderstorms now for two days, and they are expected to keep going tomorrow...Oliver is a nervous wreck!!

I hate to give meds unnecessarily, but is there anything safe that we could give him to help calm him down...and allow us all to sleep when it is like this?!

I know it will nt help us for this round of storms, as it is almost 11:00pm and definitely not worth an emergency trip!! But is there anything that we could have onhand to give him in situations like this?

We do as much as we can for him as far as closing windows, holding him, even putting his leash on him and making him sit beside us...he still goes nuts!

Any advice would be appreciated...I would love to sleep tonight! My son got a concussion and neck injury lastnight so I had to wake him every two hours, so did not sleep lastnight, and I feel I will not sleep tonight!!

Tambrey, we're not in the habit of recommending sedative-like meds without your vet's supervision (plus we know nothing about your dog or his health condition).

I would suggest calling your vet ahead of time, and asking him about acepromazine or benedryl to have on hand for such incidences, but both are based on weight and the effects are not specific for every dog.

For tonite, maybe keep him in your room with windows closed, drapes/curtains closed, maybe a fan on or soft radio music to help soften the storm sounds.

Oh, I would never think of giving him anything that the vet did not give us...I was just wondering if there is any such thing to even bother asking him about...
if I knew sort of what to ask for, and I like to research about any meds I give, to us or the critters...and if I do not like side effects or whatever, I will look for alternatives or weigh the benefits versus the problems...

I do not take any medicines lightly, nor would I for our pets...was just wondering what there might be to consider for him...
