I took Carter to the vet yesterday due to a bad cut on his paw. The vet wanted to do an xray of his foot to make sure he also did not have a fracture (we went hiking last weekend and he was running around the woods, cut himself in two places and still does not want to use the foot). Anyway, no fractures, but the vet pointed out some small bone spurs in his foot, saying this was arthritis. He didn't offer any solutions besides supplements, which Carter already gets (Cosequin and glucosamine). I asked about fixing the bone spurs, he said that couldn't be done.
Has anyone ever heard of this?? The vet said it's rare, usually joint degeneration shows up in the hips or elbows, which I knew of course. Although I'm sure there are dogs with this condition who just never happen to have their feet x-rayed. Carter is 5 years old. He does not seem to be bothered by this arthritis if that's what it is, but I would like to stall it or improve the condition. It was bad news to me, as it probably does cause him discomfort. Any suggestions? Does this warrant a trip to a specialist?

Actually there are vets who can grind them down, but it is a painful operation and very often they just grow back.

agree they can be ground down or curetted out but usually causes more damage than it is worth...if the , or it, gets real bad that a padded bootee can be used but have never seen that have to be done...
