Kenai will be 4 years old this month. We bought her for good money from a supposedly top of the line breeder. The kennel was well maintained, all the pups were beautiful as were the adults. The owner kept us in her home for over 3 hours showing us pictures, and ribbons and videos, and walking us around the grounds to show us all her dogs. It was quite impressive, and we bought a pup.
By the time kenai was a year old, it was evident that something was wrong with her. If we tossed a ball, she would go after it, tumble or stumble and go head over heels and go down. One day, we decided no more playing, and she picked up a stick on her own accord, flung it and took off after it, fell over and couldn't get up!
We rushed her to the vet, and he told us she needed a specialist, so we took her in to be seen. She was diagnosed with a rare bone disorder. We were told that she could easily break a bone. We were told to keep her in a kennel as much as possible, not let her travel with us etc.. We went home and talked it over and decided that other than no playtime with her, we couldn't just pen her up so she will live longer, and we would just let her be a dog.
She hasn't broken any bones, but she is having a hard time moving around now. I know that the decision is at hand and quicker than we want it to be, but I was wondering if there was anything that someone knew about that would help her joints? She is so young, and she does not have the hip dysplasia, her movements are stiffened in her front legs. The vet said that this was caused by the *beep* being bred back so many times to the same male and it weakened the lines. When we told the breeder about what we discovered and sent her the paperwork on it, she could of cared less.

i think this is osteomalacia, could be wrong but just:
just pretend that is the right word...i don't think its cause is known other than genetics but maybe the breeder never saw it before in her line...i do not know of any cure or any treatment other than palliative..if you want to send me your e-mail i can forward a discertaion on when to make the decision but i personally have no idea how to cure it...
