i dont know if anyone remembers my earlier posts about austin losing patches of hair above his tail, but it is STILL happening!!
vet doesnt know why
1 its not fleas ticks or mites!!
2 he doesnt seem to be scratcing or biting at it!!
3 he hasnt changed and is as happy and bouncy as usual!!
4 he is eating well and his toliet motions are fine (well you know what i mean)
5 vet asked was he sleeping or more lazy than usual (no)
6 his diet hasnt changed!!
what can i do!!!
i hate not having a reason for this!!!
i am going to ask vet to blood test him to see if anything shows up!1
antibiotics didnt clear it up so i am really worried (hair regrew alittle but it is gone again now)
ANY IDEAS!!!
i started putting E45 cream on it last nite is this ok??
austin still losing hair
Re: austin still losing hair
if this loss of hair is on the top surface of the tail a few inches from where the tail fastens to the body then it is known as tail head sebaceous gland area...the picture below might shoiw it in the top illustration (page 886 Miller Anatomy of the dog, 1964) if this is the area show this to your vet it may give him a reminder of anatomy which we all forget...if it is not located here then forget my theory...i used to tell clients it was their sitz gland area cause it usually showed in a spot where the dog would sit on its tail and that spot hits the ground....if not here then forget my theory..
Re: austin still losing hair
Kelly- if davet is telling you that it is just because it is the spot he sits on..let me tell you a little story.
Honey had this "patch" of funny looking skin on her 'elbow'- whitish, flakey, hair loss also. I took her to the new vet at the practice since mine was away. After over $110.00 later, a couple of visits, and medicine and her trying to figure out if it was- fungus, mites, fleas,etc,ect...well I posted on the board and DAVET HIT IT! This was simply a patch of dry skin where she rested that elbow on the floor when she laid down. And this was confirmed when my regular vet came back. (When I complained she was very nice and didn't charge for third visit and has given me other breaks. ) So I gotta tell you - the man is good!

Re: austin still losing hair
misenterpetation Traci....sitting on it was not the cause...sitting was just to describe the location, ie if the dog sat with its tail under him, that would be the pqrt that hits the floor....just to clarify location...not cause...
Re: austin still losing hair
whoops thaug traci had said that, not you Moms paws.....can;t win them all
