cornea deposit

Post by lmd »

When the vet was checking before rabies vaccination, he identified cholesterol deposits on both her eyes. They look like white paint has been splashed on the eye. He says there is nothing to do about it. Does anyone have any info for this. She had cerf eye checks as a pup and is four now.

This is otherwise known as a corneal dystrophy (lipid dystrophy), and your vet is correct, treatment is usually not necessary, unless there is obvious inflammation, pain or partial loss of sight, or ulcerations present. If your vet is not familiar with treating potential advanced disease, you might want to ask him to refer you to a canine opthamologist. It may not be to that stage at this time, and might not progress, but you do need to rule out the possibility of epithelial vs endothelial dystrophy, in which these two conditions can advance into worsening symptoms, which may require surgery.

Thanks Traci. Is there a cause, something that can be changed to prevent the initial or continuing problem? Her littermates have no problems. I will contact the opthamologist who did her eye check.

Most literature suggests it is inheritable...what breed is your dog?

it is cholesterol deposits and is no problem except for the esthetics,,it would be interesting to see if the cat is running a high cholesterol...i never did bother running a cholesterol on these anmals because it rarely, if ever caused a problem, except for the owners,,,the animals never seemed to mind the spots

Davet, it's a dog....you never ran cholesterol or triglycerides? I read somewhere at least running cholesterol could help the client make choices about diet, which probably isn't too concerning in this case, but a high fat diet doesn't help.
