julie B got a question??

Post by davet »

i assume you are doig all your surgery with gas anesthesia etc..are they showing you how to use im or iv injections to obtain anesthesia...seems like all the modern ways are to use inhalation however when you don't have an anesthetist available what are you learning...i used to do most of my spays and c-secs, ortho work etc with Rompum and ketaset (forget the dosage) but it left me free to do the surgery without having to work the ambu bag between my knees=====just curius''addendum, i did once in a while add a little pentobarb IV it the proceedure was too long--not for Cs though..

And yes, we are using gas anesthesia on our surgery patients (usually halothane with the dogs, which isn't my favorite, but the cats and puppies get iso first). However, we use thiopental to induce after premedicating with acepromazine/hydromorphone. But we learn about ALL the drugs out there. We are aware of all the drugs and their uses (we have quite comprehensive anesthesia courses and an anesthesia rotation), and though we discuss using only injectibles, we are taught that for a procedure of any duration, it is best to have the patient intubated and on gas for ventilation purposes. We are aware of the alpha agonists (medetomidine-Domitor/antesedan) and their uses, etc. Our surgeries are generally very long procedures, since we are learning, so of course they are on gas And very closely monitored, as one student in each group is specifically in charge of monitoring anesthesia. Does this answer your question?

philosphy that you may not always have help with your surgery..i never got into Domtor etc..had a vial of each but don't remember ever using it..if i expected the surgery to be extra long then i would keep an indwelling with pentobarab or some other agent just incase..we used to do c-section on Chinchilla and our sedation was to pack them in ice and give a local, no general anesthesia except the ice..i guess i'm going back to my old philosphy that you may not always have help and may be required to do things alone...like trauma cases in the middle of the night...i got along pretty well with rompom/ket combination with pento iv if needed...never lost a c-section puppy although a few were a little drowsy but the old under the tongue analeptic and warm water revives them and the squelling pups revives the mother....have fun, which i am sure you will
