URGENT:
we have no urgent care vet here . There is no other vet we trust except the one that will see him tomorrow.
K9, approx, 6 yrs old. Un neutered.
Presented with swollen testicles a couple of days after being boarded by vet's office for a week.
Reason it was seen was dogs paws was bleeding due to being in a kennel and he doesn't stop running around and gets raw. Has happened before and we treat accordingly. Noticed the testicles when I was cleaning paws.
Swollen,
Raw to where they are red,
Oozing something that smells almost like his urine.
Being cleaned and treated with some bag balm due to thinking it was just him doing it out of bordom while we were gone.
swelling is down
BUT today I went to take him out and BEFORE i took him out his testicles were cold and wet(raw as well) and I finally squeezed a litttle to see where his testicles were and I can't feel them it feels all mushy inside.
What the heck his going on? There is no sense saying bring him in, i can't get him to a vet till tomorrow and I am very furious about it. These people here are stupid.
His regular vet wont even be able to do surgery on him so its off to 1st vet then to someone I dont even know for any surgery related issues we might have with him. Nuetering and what ever else.
He is otherwise normal playing no issues at all. He is licking which what made us think he was doingthat while we were gone and now since it's irritated that is why he continues.
What do i do NOW for him that will help situation before i get him in tomorrow?
What should I NOT do?
He is caged in house anyway so I dont have to worry about both dogs rough housing.
I dont want to go in the vets office not knowing what it might be. I know there might be 100's of things wrong but what seems to be obvious besides that is testicles haveto be removed?

Re: URGENT:
OK, i was WRONG he has tesicles there and they were warm 15 minutes after I last checkedhim.
it must have been that he was just licking htem and that is why they were cold. He was laying down and that might be why i didn't feel testicles in the sacks.
BUT he is still raw and it smells like pee. (maybe pee) it smells like "him" that is just hte way he smells.
Oh he is on Ceftin right now 500mg's BID. I forgot to mention that sorry. Talked to vet yesterday so Sgt. has been on it since yesterday.
I am glad I checked him again because I was so scared. BUT i am still peeved that there is no vet around here. what is up with that? I have to call the emergency care place that I "THOUGHT" was open tomorrow to make sure if they still are in business or not becasue what if I have a serious problem where I really need to get to a vet. and all vets are closed and no one is sending them out to anywhere.
It also isnt a good thing that this ONE and only place is all anyone ever relied on and now it might be closed. at least that is what the vets' answering machines are saying. OMG
I am still upset though and he WILL be seen by vet because what if this isn't just from him licking.

Re: URGENT:
Sorry I am now just getting to this, hopefully by now you have seen a vet.
It could have started from boredom (licking), but it could also have been a lingering infection that is worsening. If you have an e-collar, use it in any case where the dog is licking excessively, because by allowing them to lick, risks further spread of infection. It could also be a newly forming UTI or stone formation, which demands immediate veterinary care. Since he's intact, this could also be a testes or prostate issue, make sure the vet checks for those.
Whichever vet you see, ask them why there is no emergency service in the area, or ask your own vet. If you're in a very rural area, I'm afraid this is often the case, but usually, vets do refer to another vet for emergency services, you might have to settle for making a lengthier trip for the service.
I'm confused, you were able to talk to a vet, but couldn't see you? Where did the cefuroxime come from, did you have this on hand? Did you check the expiration date on it? It is risky prescribing an antibiotic of this class to a dog who hasn't been examined.

Re: URGENT:
I spoke to the tech on sunday when dr. was there and that is when we talked about meds. I always get extra meds when I get any from them in case we need them on an emergency basis. So vet knows that anything I have for dogs is always from him and up to date with expiration.Traci wrote: I'm confused, you were able to talk to a vet, but couldn't see you? He said most likely from licking it out of boredom as well didn't see anything wrong either. Dog didn't like it but hey had to be done.
I am still looking into why the ER vets service wasn't on, I'm actually trying to find out why they aren't answering at all. I called a vet close by and they said they just don't do ER stuff and they dont refer out during non business hours. (note to self...dont use them).
You can't walk to anywhere around here so yes it's a drive. I certainly dont mind driving to where I need go our regular vet is about 20mins 25 mins with traffic away. But I need to make sure that I research this so I know for sure who is around because what if last night really was an emergency and I dont know who to go to and the one i thought was closed. So making sure I find out so I have it for future.
Sgt(dog) isn't happen that I am watching him like a hawk but he seems comfortable and today hasn't licked at all except when he was touched and annoyed that we groped him lol.
I have an eye on him
I have tried to type this for a few hours now but girls are being unruly so hopefully i didn't forget anything.

Re: URGENT:
VEt assumed UA so sent out to be cultured he is on Ceftin and vet says finish it. depending on the culture back if he needs to go on Doxycyline we'll do that as well for 3 weeks.
He is the one with chronic UTI's but this clearly looks like it's form boredom. He has had uti's before nad never did this to his testicles.
He is on Kibble and so is the older dog at this point. These were the dogs that were on Raw but we switched them knowing it would be too much of a hassle when we were gone during the summer for someone to feed so we switched them and I have kept them on it. Its been a while so it's not from the food change.
He goes potty often and plays and stuff and I still can't get these dang UTI's under control. Although I must say it's been about a year since his last one. I think ... i'd have to check my posts to see.
They are on Benniful right now and we do not switch up foods if one is on sale. It's Benniful or Benniful that is that, no choices lol.
His testicles are red and still oozing. Vet didn't give any salve to put on it....Hmmm wonder if I should talk to him about that or put some bag balm on it again?
Traci, does bag balm even really work?

Re: URGENT:
Oh and just in case you were wondering..... I will be looking into a new place to board the dogs since leaving them with the vet isn't working out. I mean the reason we leave them there is in case there is something wrong. Well if he had a problem and his testicles were swollen and they did nothing not even say hey Doc something looks wrong then I can't trust them.
I mean there are only two girls working there and the Vet. So those two girls are doing everything from poop duty to receptionist. I have to say that having done that as a tech myself many many years ago I know it can be done and animals get treated properly so I hold all vets up to my standards. Since the standard of care isn't great when I am not around I can't continue with them. I might have to board them in summer with him but i will be searching for a better place. I just wish I trusted another place as well as I trust this vet and use to trust the people that worked there.

Re: URGENT:
I just wanted to update that although he is still raw it doesn't smell anymore.
The entire scrotum is red but now instead of it all being raw and oozing it's still red but with patches that are oozing and the ooze doesn't smell anymore.
If this makes any sense. It's 8am here and I haven't had a lot of sleep between kids and older dog wanting to go out at 2am.
should I wash this area? He doesn't like that But I have been and been patting it dry to make sure yeast or bacterial infection doesn't happen. Vet didn't say yes or no, i'll call office today to ask him, i dont want to do anything that might be wrong and make it worse.

Re: URGENT:
First, use the e-collar, the less licking and manipulation he does, the better.
Only use warm water until you've spoken to your vet, and only gently wipe the area twice a day. Since there appears to be open sores, don't use bagbalm or anything else, it could trap moisture and bacteria.
You know I have to ask, why isn't he neutered?

Re: URGENT:
He was going to be shown and that didn't happen, neither of them were shown, but Max(older) wasn't because he only had one testicle down so Sgt. was given to us due to the guarantee we had with the breeder. We were going to let them get to their full growth then do it but it never happened.
I know they should be but we must find a vet that we trust first. This vet can't since he is too old to be doing surgeries.
Bad note: I am so infuriated.... I have a feeling that the cold wet damp concrete floor that has no rubber mate at all on it iswhat did it to him when he was at vets office. I am livid!!!!
Good note: I am searching for a vet's office and a kennel as well and things are looking good.
I have found out why the emergency place isn't any longer and it's bcause they stink. But there is another one. Not all vets use them though. There are vets right here near town that I didn't know were here so am looking into them as well.
