Sparky - Help for Back Legs?

Post by Sue and Kids »

I posted a question below about Sparky, my wonderful little dog, who has Cushings Disease. Thank you for replying, Traci. I did have my vet re-check Sparky's heart. She said it is in good shape. My vet did say that increased panting is another sign of Cushings.

My question now is, can anything be done to help Sparky be able to walk more normally? The Cushings has caused weakness in his back legs, so they don't give him much support. He can still walk, but his back legs slip around on any surface that is not carpet.

My hubby saw something on TV about a cart (??) being used by dogs with hip dysplasia (sp?). How do these work? Could one help Sparky?

I know I'm "grasping at straws" here, but I feel so helpless. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ask your vet to re-evaluate the Lysodren dosage/blood level, it is somewhat common for side effects to occur during initial treatment, so get that ruled out. Also make sure he isn't developing a secondary problem, like diabetes.

As for surfaces, you could try a cart, but maybe try booties first, like something with rubber traction on the bottom of the booties. Give the medications a chance to show improvement, but it's IMPERATIVE your vet regularly checks his dose, blood levels so she can gauge effectiveness or change dosing if necessary.

Re: this statement from Traci "Ask your vet to re-evaluate"

never hesistate to ask your vet any questiuons of itemes that you are never sure about...even ask how did he/she come to that diagnosis or decision..Vets actually are normal human beings (although sometimes my clients may have questioned me as to that)

and if the vet gets indignant or insulteed, you can classify that as TS...but dont storm out if you actually like or trust your vet...Because one obnoxious moment or display or tempor will not (should not) interfer with future visits...//

sounds lie a sermon doesnlt it

Thanks, Davet! I appreciate any input I can get, "sermon" or not!

Actually, I'm on good terms with my vet. But thanks for writing! I can get very emotional about my "kids", but she is very caring too.

I'm going to post an update on Sparky on the forum, if you're interested in seeing how he's doing!
