Pebbles has an upper respiratory infection

Post by oconnorjoy »

Pebbles and Buddy went to Petland last week to be groomed and caught a virus. The vet says it is probably kennel cough. I find that confusing since they were both vaccinated against that in September. Buddy's is resolving without much problems but Pebbles is having a rough go with it. She's coughing and sneezing lots...and is very congested. She is still eating and drinking and her lungs sounded good. (thank God) She has to take Delta Albaplex 1/2 tab every 12 hrs for 7 days.

Traci...have you heard of dogs catching kennel cough after being vaccinated?

Were they vaccinated with intranasal or injectable bordetella vaccines?

Yes it's possible.

It's usually recommended that a "booster" is given 1-2 weeks prior to expected exposure (kenneling, shows, other exposure, groomers would fit in this category).

This is usually self-limiting, but if she doesn't improve on the meds, get her back to your vet for a recheck...if she's older or in any way immunocompromised, she may have exacerbated symptoms (and develop secondary bacterial infection) as opposed to an otherwise healthy, young dog.

They were vaccinated with the injectable bordetella vaccines. Pebbles is only four but has mild collapsing trachea. I will definitely take her back in if the meds don't help.

So they would need a booster 2 weeks before I take them to the groomer each time? I've always bathed them myself...this was their first time going to a professional groomer. I think it may be the last.

Thanks Traci

It depends on how often they go to the groomer. Many vets recommend vaccinating twice a year (every 6 months) with bordetella for dogs who have more exposure to other dogs/environment. I don't think it's necessary to vaccinate more than twice a year.

As long as the vet is certain (but doesn't sound like he is?), this should pass soon enough, but do watch Pebbles very carefully for any signs she is not healing, or if the symptoms persist past a week or worsen. With a partial collapsed trachea, you don't want her agrivating that by coughing excessively. At home, try to keep her calm, mild exericse only, keep dusts, environmental agents, cleaning, etc reduced to the barest minimum.
