Any Sheltie people here? Questions about my pup..
Any Sheltie people here? Questions about my pup..
I have been surfing the net looking at various pics of full grown shelties as well as pups and I am starting to wonder if my pup is mixed with something else. I'm waiting for my camera to charge up so I can get some pics to see what you guys think. She definitely has the small sheltie body (she was also the runt of the liter but was so damn cute I absolutely could not pass her up) and the snout of one, but her ears always stick straight up and don't lay over like alot of the pictures I have seen. She also is not as "bushy" as alot of shelties that I have seen. Maybe they grow into it or something but it seems like she should have more fur at her age of almost 5 months. What do you sheltie people think? The lady we got her from (she works with my gf) said that both of her parents were shelties so maybe she just has not grown into herself.. or could it be because she was the runt?
I will have pics up in a few!

I'm certainly not a sheltie expert, but she's the cutest thing I've ever seen!

Karen is the sheltie expert here, I'm sure she'll post when she sees this.
The pups I've known usually have a short to medium length, cotton-y coat in early puppyhood, and I've seen the straight-up ears that eventually turn (and sometimes only one ear turns), but I'm not sure exactly when that occurs.
In any case, your pup is absolutely adorable!!

Thank you!
Yes she is a doll.. and extremely smart for her age! I can't wait for it to warm up so she can go and play in the pond. She almost jumped in it yesterday while we were on our walk lol.
When we first picked her up ear ears had a little "flop" to them but ever since they have been standing STRAIGHT up like that!

I have collies, and have worked with shelties. They often have the ears you see on your dog. I have a few with upright eqars - no problem at all. I`ve also seen Sheltie pups that take a while to get the fluffy undercoat - especially if they are in a nice warm home. Enjoy.

My gf's mother has 3 collies and a sheltie also.. Its hard to tell them apart sometimes just by looks. One of the females she has is very short haired with the perky mouse ears like my pup and they look identical, while a male from the same litter has more hair on his chest area then my longhaired cat Baxter has on his whole body!

That is an adorable sheltie pup. It's just the equivalent of our adolescent years - they look a bit like a fox or a possum during that time. All ears, legs, and nose! Ears that go straight are very normal. Most dogs with tipped ears have had the ears taped or weighted down in order to get the tip. Once they go straight, however, there is no going back - they're here to stay.
Your pup is at the age when the adult coat is just starting to come in. It's still sparse and will take time to grown in. Most of mine did not develop the full fluffy coat until they were at least 2 or 3 years old.
From the pictures you've posted, I'd say that very cute pup is 100% sheltie, and I'm betting she will grow to be absolutely gorgeous. As a female, she may not develop the really lush coat that the males have. Some of them do, but most don't. You should see a big diffenence in a couple of years. You just have to be patient.

Haha thanks for all of the compliments.
Her big ol ears do get alot of laughs when we are out and about that is for sure. I wish that they had the "flop" to them, but I'm not for doing something un-natural to make them look a certain way so I guess she is stuck with em! Maybe her head will grow into them a bit as she gets older! LOL
