Not my dog. This is for a friend!
"My faithful black Lab Bubba had a very bad day... I was taking him out to see the horses, he took off running inthe back yard, and after 3 strides, his back legs just quit working."
"They X-rayed him, did some pain and flexion tests, and concluded he has a slipped disk between T-13 and L1. Bubba can wag his tail, but he can't walk and barely has any feeling in his back legs. They have put him on massive amounts of steroids to quickly reduce the inflammation. He has to be in the hospital for two or three days.
I called back our other vet and his wife said before we make any decisions about euthanasia, to bring Bubba over there for a chiro treatment, that Dr. d. has helped other paralyzed dogs..."
I am not sure why but they said surgery wasn't an option. Is there really much that can be done for the dog? Are there any other options they may be able to try?
Question about a Lab with slipped disk between T-13 and L1
Re: Question about a Lab with slipped disk between T-13 and
again discs do not slip...the herniat or rupture but the catch all "slip" should be removed...the general rule is to not do surguery unless paralysis is imminent and then within the first 24 hours....it can be risky surgery at the best...but steroids are your best bet...personally, and strickly my opinion, but i would not let chiros work on this...i have seen doxies become paralyzed after chiro manipulation...now i am sure there will be people who say they have done wonders but you never hear the down sides..i have had several doxies go to a chiro and then the owners get mad at me for not undoing the paralysis....stick with the steroids at least for a while.....swimming is good exercise etc.....again this is onlymy opinion and based only on my experience....

Thanks davet!
I kinda wondered about the chiro, but I wasn't sure. I do think they are trying the steroids. Hopefully they'll see some improvement and won't need the chiro!

Re: Question about a Lab with slipped disk between T-13 and
forgot one point...you don't attempt surgery intitialoly because, with the steroids and rest, there is always a good chance that recovery can take place, or a better term would be that the animal, or persons system can adjust the the protrusion or compression....and nothing could be worse than a chrio maniipulation on an already compromised disc....
