I messaged her privately so as not to go into gory details on the boards since her mother frequents the boards everyday.

I talked to her about hand washing and that although it seems I am being motherly it really is true about hand washing and wounds.

I also talked to her about the bedding and that it might have to be changed or a disposable wetpad used if the bedding can not be hot water washed and bleached.

The dog was scoped and checked.....Traci is there anything else they should be doing?

Oh good Tam thanks for letting me know that dad is coming to see Justice. That will be very very good for her. Being a service dog she is clear headed but her charge being near her will provide her with the will to pull through this. Hmmmm maybe I should tell her that.

Assuming the vet actually found and visualized a puncture wound? If not, then she should be checking for other puncture wounds (when a dog bites, both upper and lower teeth sink in, so look for wounds matching the teeth position), OR, a wound caused by a metal (like iron, dirty metal or steel, etc), which could cause tetanus, other serious infection.

Is or was the wound ever red/bruised/swollen? Did the appearance of bruising or redness also travel up/down the leg or elsewhere? Any chance the dog was bitten by a spider/insect or snake? These would all be things to rule out if no puncture wound was actually visualized. Does or did the dog ever have a fever, or subcutaneous edema at the wound site or elsewhere?

If the vet is experienced and found a puncture wound, and is treating as such, then since surgery to place drain tubes was only yesterday, she needs to expect a few days to show signs of recovery. The drain tubes WILL drain blood or pus for a few days, but each day the drainage should be getting more clear, or blood-tinted discharge. There's always a potential for allergic reaction to the drain tubes, so make sure she monitors the area closely, check for swelling/bruising/redness etc, and notify the vet at once if any of these appear or worsen. Keep the wound clean and dry, and do allow the dog to go potty etc, but minimal exercise/activity (since one will have to clean up the drainage when the dog is moving about). If pain is present, the dog should self-limit his activity, but owner needs to restrict activity as well. When using betadine, it's best to dilute it with warm water a bit, hopefully the vet told her how to dilute it?

If the owner is the least bit concerned, whether it is the pain aspect or changes in the wound's appearance, contact vet immediately for re-evaluation. The drains will need to be removed in about 5-7 days or sooner, but the vet may want to recheck the wound in a couple days.

the young lady taking care of her dad's dog posted this at 5:34 CST
Well Justice still has appetite. Has eaten all of his food. And then looked at me as if to say "Well where is the rest of it. I am still hungry." Laughing It was really cute.
and this at 6:40pm CST
Justice did so much better going outside for a break this evening. The vet has given us Ultram for his pain and it seems to be taking the edge off.

Just wanted to update..
Dog is healed and doing well and back with dad. Coco(the daughter) took great care of this dog and I must say that I really believe it was her tremendous effort that saved this dog. She did what was needed and was in constant contact with the Vet. She has left her parents house to live with her husband(or soon to be husband, i dont remember) lol. She traveled with her dogs a long way and is such a great kid. We are so proud of her.

Thought you'd like to know the outcome of Justice and his boo boo.
