Well, here's an obvious question, have you mowed the lawn? If the grass is too high, small dogs usually won't appreciate walking in it. Also, wheatgrass or other spur-like weeds/plants in the yard?

Give your vet a call and explain the new behavior. He will probably tell you to monitor him, but if this continues, regardless if specifically yard-related or not, you may need to get him examined, just to play it safe. It's rare that disc problem would re-occur after surgery, but never say never, particularly in a doxie.

I did get the south side mowed, but not the north side yet..it is on the todo list for today...but it gets mowed weekly, so does not get too tall...he was over rolling and scrooching on his back in the side I had not cut lastnight...

he actually seems to be okay once he gets out there...it is getting him out the door and down the steps that has become the hassle...even getting him out the door was a near impossible task a while ago...I got down and peered under the steps and do not see or smell anything...

And when he was out a while ago...he actually walked by the herbs and stopped to sniff at each one...they are off to the side near my perennial flowerbed right now waiting for a place to be planted...it seems to be the porch and sidewalk that have him spooked...so weird....

I am at a total loss....if he keeps it up much longer today I am going to get him seen at the vet...just to make sure he is not suffering from an injury or something...I just keep thinking that if he were hurt...he would not run around...or scrooch on the ground or jump on us (when he knows he is NOT supposed to do that!)

It is VERY hot and humid these last couple of days...so even in the house all he does is stretch out on his bed or belly down on the floor....

tam you said he has had this behavior before.? is this an ongoing thing, did he have this when you got him or shortly after you got him? How long have you had him and where is he from? what kind of dog is he and how old?

If he has always done this, then that is simple(i hope) that is a behavior(fear most likely) issue I can help you with. I of course would say vet first to make sure before thinking behavior. Steps is sometimes an issue for dogs, did you try putting hte leash on him and trying the other side of the house or a side that doesnt have steps?

Let me know

Hmmm, the steps could be prohobitive for him if he's feeling pain. Don't wait, just give your vet a call and tell him you're expecting to bring him in for a quick exam. He can test for pain and nerve problems.

That is true, the steps might make him walk a certain way and bring out the pain that way. That might explain is hoppin around.

no...he has never acted this way before...just started yesterday...no matter which way we go out of our house, there is going to be steps...but even when I carried him down, he turned and ran right back up them...

Now, he did go out fine this evening when "Daddy" got home...Sammie is more "Daddy's boy" than mine...even though he is friendly with everyone he comes in contact with...so unlike doxies...

He is running around playing and having a ball...but when it was time to come inside...he did not want to come onto the sidewalk...he wanted to go around the flower bed and a roundabout way to get up to the steps....

I will check with the vet tomorrow...gotta go there anyways because his wife got a new washing machine and I am going to take theirs as mine is not running right...can't beat FREE!!

A couple of thoughts:

How hot is the sidewalk?

Critters? I know you have a bunch, but this sounds like he's afraid of something he's not used to or had a run-in with in the past. Coyote, cougar, bobcat maybe? Any bears? It's amazing how many critters we get in our yard here in suburbia - rabbits, snakes (including a pygmy rattler once, and our neighbor had a cotton mouth in his), soft-shell tortoises, snapping turtles, possums, armadillos, squirrels, etc. I always know when something's there even if a can't see it - Foxy's nose goes 90 miles an hour and she refuses to leave the porch.

the sidewalk was not hot...well, okay, it was not cool, but not terribly hot either...he has lounged out on it on hotter days than the last couple have been...

no bears or anything in this area....oh the occasional skunk, along with what I listed before...but we would KNOW if a skunk got THAT close to our house

He was better this evening...the only other thing I can think of is that my son...age 17...has recently taken up the nasty habit of smoking, thinking he is oh so cool or whatever...it is a HUGE discussion at our house lately...and he sits outside to smoke...and there was a shirt of his on the front porch that was yucky and he just pulled off and tossed aside there...Sammie balked at it...I am wondering if it is cigarette smells and the things he was hopping around were cigarette butts in the yard...my son sits on the swing over by the hedges and smokes there...much to my chagrin and dismay...but that is a whole other discussion I will not get into ....his therapist is dealing with it with him...anyways.....

that still does not explain his fear of actually going out onto the porch though...

He was better this evening in going out to go potty...

Today was good...he ran out as usual...did his thing....came back in for a while then wanted back out...he wanted to stay out on his tie-out so he sat in the front yard soaking up the sun for about an hour...then came tearing back into the house running circles as usual...

So whatever it was...it is gone...
