Got a question for chemists, biologists, vet people, etc on

...some terms in a vet product I bought today. The ongoing Mr. Blue bandage saga yet again! For Mr. Blue, bitter apple spray seems pretty useless; he actually licks right after I spray it on! When I talked to the vets' office about it yesterday, they said they had a product, so I went in today to pick some up. It's called "Bandguard," and it contains "diphemanil methosulphate (an anticholinergic)" That's right off the label. What are these things? It supposedly is very unpleasant-tasting, and the vet tech today said they've heard from a lot of dog people that it works much better than bitter apple spray. I tried to do a search, but I get this really annoying thing that sort of takes over my Internet when I try to do a search. I don't know if its from Comcast (our provider) or what, but I basically have to stop surfing and shut all of it down when this thing appears. So anyway, if any of you could help me understand what these things are, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Did a search, Mary, and thie following is from the Merck site ( Dorland's medical dictionary). The methosulphate is spelled methylsulfate so it may or not be identical. Nothing came up on google for bandgaurd...

diphemanil methylsulfate (di·phe·ma·nil meth·yl·sul·fate) (di-fe¢m[schwa]-nil) a quaternary ammonium anticholinergic, used in the treatment of peptic ulcer, gastric hyperacidity, and hypermotility in gastritis and pylorospasm, and in the treatment of hyperhidrosis, administered
orally.

Mary, I've never heard of it but j's search is accurate. Most quats are very bitter, which makes sense for the application here.

Off the subject but have you tried Listerine? The plan, not mint. I pour that on bandages and it seems to keep the dog away from it. You can buy a small travel size just to see if it works on Mr. Blue. Got that tip from my new vet, not the old one who retired.

OK. I left his leg unwrapped all night again, but wrapped it this morning and sprayed it. The plain Listerine sounds like a good idea, if he decides to suddenly "like" this stuff. He was pretty clever yesterday, when I was still using bitter apple. He went upstairs and laid down on our bed. I went up and checked, and he'd left it all alone. He came downstairs an hour or so later, with no bandage. I went upstairs, and he had tried to hide the torn bandage under the edge of the bed.

(ps. My cocker spaniel is frightened to death by bitter apple but my terrier mutt lovvvvvvves it! guess it kinda depends on the dog!) GOOD LUCK!

diphemanil methosulphate (an anticholinergic is also referred to as DMSO...it is a really rotten smelling compound that can carry medication through the skin, allmost like a hypoodermic...i used to mix Predinsone with it to get it right to the joint...but it is rotten eggs galore...Corinne could tell as soon as i walked in the door that i had been using it..it is also an analgesic...the grooms at the training tract (horses) used to come inMonday mornings wiht a hangover and there were 55 gallon drumns of it and they would slosh it all over their head to get rid of headaches.....man did they smell---it is used in a more refined form now and i suspect its use on bandages ets=c was due to its rotton odor...never used it for that but i suspect it would work...but listerine is safer and as effective......

davet, DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide, a completely different compound. DMSO does have the properties you describe, tho - people used to rub it in their joints for arthritis!

FYI, Schering-Plough manufacturers Bandguard....according to the MSDS, it contains diphemanil methyl sufate, polyethylene glycol, and zinc stearate.
