Eggshells?

Okay...I have a question....the discussion all started this weekend when I had out a pan with 10 eggs on to boil, my husband asked if I wanted to go to the store with him, and I forgot about the eggs!!

While at the store (20 minutes away) I remembered the eggs

We got done, went home and furtunately the pan had not boiled dry yet, and the eggs were still usable...But I have had that happen before (another messy story )....

When I mentioned it to friends though, we got to talking about dogs and eggs...the majority said they give their dogs eggs IN THE SHELL...hard boiled or RAW....to eat...as it is healthy for them?!

My fear is the eggshells could potetially cut mouth or stomach or intestines...they say the calcium is good for them and they do it all the time for theirs....
One said she gives a hard boiled egg in the shell to their parrot...okay, I can see this...they need the gritty stuff for their gizzard, correct?

But dogs eating eggshells?!...IS it safe or not?

Nope, nope and nope.

As always, whenever anyone says "raw", as with everything, think salmonella, etc.

I guess those people have never had hardboiled eggs and got a stray piece of eggshell in their mouth I'm sure if you asked them how would they like to heat either a hardboiled or raw egg in it's shell, they would cringe.

As for the other story...a few years back, I had eggs on to boil and went upstairs and got sidetracked sorting through stuff in the spare room...After a long while, I hear a loud popping and smelled something awful so RAN down the stairs as Sammie, our doxie, ran by with a whitelblobby mess on his back...

I went to the kitchen and there was exploded egg literally EVERYWHERE...stuck to cabinets, counters, the stove and the ceiling 12 feet high...

Raw eggs - are they nuts. Salmonella, Campylobacter - ugly infections neither you nor your critters need.

Foxy got a whole boiled egg in the shell one time - it must have rolled out of the refrigerator when it was opened. She apparenly enjoyed it and there were no bad conseqences. This was totally accidental but just because it didn't cause her any problems that one time, wouldn't recommend doing it on purpose. If they truly believe their dog needs extra calcium, give them a calcium tablet or some cheese.

I boil my duck eggs for the dogs for treats. I cut them in half and scoop out the egg, and feed the shell back to the ducks. One day a collie ate about 10 cooked eggs in the pan in the ditchen sink. She reached up high enough to get them. There was no problem, but I learned to cool the eggs where no one can reach them.
