Nick has been bit

Post by JUDY S »

I haven't been here in a while, but I need some advice. Nick was bit by one of my other dogs. I have been to the vet, have medication and am cleaning and treating the wounds, two small bite marks. One of them is on her chest just below where the leg starts. I can tell that there is air in there by the feeling and sound of her leg and the surrounding area. The vet said that it would happen, but I didn't expect so much. Is this normal, will it go away on it's own? Do we need to go back to the vet again?

Was an xray done? Are her heart and lung sounds normal? (via your vet's stethoscope at exam)

What are the antibiotics being used?

Is the wound draining pus? Did the vet debride the wound? (remove infected/dead tissue). Are you monitoring the wound closely for any signs of redness/swelling/bruising/tissue necrosis? If any of these occur, you need to get back to the vet at once for a reassessment and possible further debridement.

If the wound is in a pleural space (pocket under the skin or in the chest/abdomen cavities), there is increased risk for infection and fluid buildup, so if you're hearing air that seems to be increasing and if she's uncomfortable in the least, yes, get her seen right away so he can re-examine the wound, put a drain in if possible, determine if stronger antibiotics may be warranted.
