Puppy with Giardia

My friend just got a new puppy that was diagnosed with Giardia (sp?). She's had the puppy for about a week and also has another dog. Can the other dog get this? Thanks.

Not only can the other dog get it, the whole family can. This is a parasitic illness that infects numerous hosts, including canines and humans. The cysts could be on the puppy, so anyone handling it must be very careful to make sure they don't eat anything or put their fingers in or near their mouth until they have been thoroughly washed. Clean any fecal "accidents" while wearing gloves. If possible, do not let the pup elimnate in the yard until it is cured (use newspaper or something that can be discarded), since the cysts can live for quite a while in the environment.
