Limping

Athena, Queensland Heeler, started limping Tuesday. Her rear legs seem stiff. She previously has been a very active dog who loves to run and jumps very high. She will be 7 years old in August. What should I do for her? For three days I've been hiding Ascripton in Dick Patten's doggie "Sausage." This morning she immediately vomitted all of it. She was so sore she couldn't squat to pee. It is so sad to see her this way. Athena is the same age Magnum was when he started limping and rapidly going downhill.

you had better get her checked to see why the limp.... a limo\p cab be nothing but after theree days it can bge a problem....get her checjk before any damage is done

I agree with Davet. There are things that can be done, but you need to have a diagnosis instead of treating it on your own.

You said she vomited up the ascriptin... is she keeping her regular food down? There could be 2 different things going on here.

Athena is keeping down her regular food. Maybe she was smart enough to know there was medicine in the beef doggie sausage or maybe it was too greasy. She usually eats kibble. Later she took the Ascripton hidden in Dick Patten canned food that is the same lamb and rice formula as the kibble.

The limping is bad in the AM and improves later in the day.

I'm calling friends to find a good vet to take her to Monday. I was hoping it was just a sprain from jumping off the high bed and wanted to spare her unnecessary X-Rays and medication. It's heart-breaking to see Athena like this. I'm keeping her as quiet as possible and try to stay in the same room a long time. She follows me like a shadow.

Natural Balance canned food has been recalled. Use something else to put the pill in for now and return the unused food. And ask your Vet for a blood panel. There may be nothing wrong with the food....things are so up in the air right now with canned food. I just wouldn't chance it with the vomitting.

I have had good luck in using cottage cheese on top of dry food and hiding a pill in there.

Thank you for letting me know that the food I bought Wednesday was redcalled the next day. Athena only got a few tablespoons of it. I'll never trust canned food again. Her leg is better today. She is running and went for a walk this morning. She must have hurt it on the rebounder jumping off the tall bed. So much for my bright idea to make her a little bed next to mine. It was too sad seeing her limp around. The thought of her having a chronic condition that limited her mobility was unbearable. She lives for her long walks and running and jumping.

I would still get her in for a checkup at a vet...with her age, it could be any number of things and you need to find out NOW if something IS starting to happen so you can begin a preventative course of action and keep her from getting pain again...or worse pain at least...

do not allow her to walk except to go outside for potty or run at all . You need to have her seen by a vet asap. Also tell the vet that you gave her the recalled food.

Her leg can be serious and if she stopped limping dont think it is nothing. Dogs hide their pain well and sometimes show it but do not let this go without the vets ok.
