Is this worrisome?

Post by MA »

I have a 5 month old German shepherd puppy. When I take her on her walks in the woods, she attacks the blackberry bushes and eats the berries. I am at a loss to understand why because of the thorns, and when I tell her "Lei Off" she will back away. I keep telling her, you are a dog not a deer! Although she is a dear dog (sometimes)

I don't think so, and to my knowledge, the poison centers don't list blackberries as toxic to dogs. However, as with any plant/berry/shrub you don't know were exposed to herbicides/fertilizers etc, or if the plant is a wild plant, exercise caution and don't let your pup/pets around them.

I suppose an ingestion at most would cause vomiting, mild GI upset or diarrhea. But, don't take that as official, I just have not heard of blackberries being toxic to dogs.

Trace-

I was more worried about the thorn issue. I know my horses plow through the blackberries and thistleberries with no problem. I just haven't ever heard of a dog that loves blackberries on the vine! I know they aren't toxic, but I also know she has to leave them alone. Keeping her away from them is insane- they are everywhere up here! She hasn't been impaled yet, no vomiting or other problems. Just curious why she is so attracted to them.

Maybe she's attracted to their scent. I guess just continue trying to teach her they are off-limits, I know, easier said than done!
