Re: Smoking: Hazardous to Your Cat

but what is said for cats is also true for dogs...i had two clinets who smoked like mad and i could smell it on the dog when they came in...I told them, if nothing else try smoking outside because the dogs can also get lung problems...they did smoke out side and both of them died within one year and the dog was given to their kids and he live to be 12....so much for advice.

when i first purchased my practice in Nov. of 1957 there was a smoking project along with the purchase...there were 40 dogs in the kennel .. they all had tracheal tubes inserted so they could be hooked up to the machines. 20 dogs smoked a pack a day and 20 dogs smoked 2 packs a day. There were a couple girls who would hook them up to the machines but most of the dogs were so addicted that they would let them out of their cages and they would run into the "smoking room" jump up into the machines and raise their heads so they could be connected. While they were smoking the two girls handling the project would sit and play chess or checkers in the room which you could hardly see from one side to the other because of the smoke...and both girls would be smoking a cigarette in that room. When the dogs started to show lung lesions the project was stopped because it was sponsered by the American tobacco associations and lung changes were not good things. For years after the tar was still on the walls in the back and on the cages, literally had to scrap the stuff off the walls and cages.......and to think that stuff is in the smokers lungs also. Was shortly after that I quit.

Wonder what happened to the 2 girls? I smoked years ago - most ppl did then and my parents and most adults I knew - but I quit 25 yrs. ago - very difficult.
There is a house across the street that they remodeled - looked beautiful. Then man and wife moved in - smokers- they invited me in one day and you wouldn't believe it - walls covered with yellow tar stuff and the whole place smelled awful due to smoke (otherwise she was an immaculate housekeeper). Man died.
The travesty of couse is that the tobacco industry with it's powerful ties and billions in clout still continues to sell cancer causing cigarettes.
