cyst-like thing on eye rim

Post by JMM »

Mikey has a little bubble-like thing on his left lower eye rim. Last week the vet stuck a needle in it and tried to squeeze something out of it. Nothing came out. We did TID warm compresses and abx ointment for a few days and I've been warm compressing and using the ointment BID after the first 3 days. It seemed to look like it was going away the first day or two, but now, almost a week out, it looks back to where it started.

Mikey has also had 3 surgeries for distichiasis and has lots of scar tissue on his eye rims.

Anybody ever seen something like this? Suggestions?

be removed or curetted out, neither of which is a big deal unleass the other surgeries were on the same lower lid..may run out of excess skin...again just a guess

eye lid cyst

Agree with davet - Roxy had a maiobian tumor on her eye lid which we had removed. Maiobian tumors are typically benign but are problematic in the sense that they can recur which was true with Roxy. The first surgery involved excising the tumor and was a simple procedure without sutures. We were advised that if it returned, a "V" shaped excision would be needed to remove it and the V closed with sutures. Because of Roxy's age, we (with the advice of our vet) decided not to have the second surgery. On one occasion, the tumor filled with serum but spontaniously drained. If the tumor becomes large and/or turns in against the eyeball, it can cause irritation and should be removed.

I'm just guessing also but I suspect it's a maiobian tumor.

Thanks...

We're hoping maybe it is a little sty and antibiotics and some steroid ointment will take care of it.

Mikey's eye rims are rather scarred from previous surgeries and we have elected not to remove the distichia that are currently bothering him because he is not a great candidate for anesthesia. If it doesn't resolve, I may see if the ophtho thinks she can do it with a local otherwise we'll see about the anesthesia...

re the distichiasis, is that not just eye lashes rubbing

Post by davet »

agains the eye ball? and if so what is the surgery..can they not be just plucked as they occur or cauterized without anesthesia....or at least even a local aneshtsia.....i've never had to do surgery on them but we may be speaking of two different situations.

Mikey has eye lashes that grow in the inside of the eye rims right into the eye. If they are at all stiff, they will rub and irritate the eye and can eventually cause ulcers. We've had the major irritators removed and currently only one particular lash is really bothersome. Others are annoying, but most of the time he isn't bothered in the least. It seems when his tear ducts need to be flushed, the eye with the bad lash gets really irritated.

Mikey is symptomatic and dogs that are symptomatic should not be bred. In most breeds, an asymptomatic dog can be bred. Swissies and Cockers are two of the most common breeds for this.

Are these growths easily removed without full anesthesia? My Rags also has a growth on her eye rim. I got a picture of it which I'll try to post here. http://www.geocities.com/rendophilous/eye.html

Is this the sort of growth talked about in this thread?

Thanks jdf, Davet, and JMM for the info here already. My dog is 16 and I don't want general anesthesia for this as of yet, but want her to be comoftable.

of like Mikey's did. We have to do one more week of Clavamox and Dexacidin to be sure it is gone. Since Mikey's has gone away with this treatment, it must have been a little cyst, not an actual tumor.
