Dog is very aggressive with cats...any advice?

Post by LinZ »

If anyone has seen my topics in Feline Health, then they know I have a new cat in the house. He remains in a cage, but my other 3 cats hate him.

Today my cat, Rolly, came into the kitchen and spotted my new cat, Kip, and hissed at him. The dog became agitated and barked at Rolly, and Rolly proceeded to hiss at her. Then the dog started biting Rolly and grabbed him by his neck and began to shake him as if she was trying to deliver that natural "animal killing blow".

My mom was screaming at her to stop, but the dog kept on shaking like Rolly was a chew toy. I'm afraid that the dog will seriously hurt my cats one day. The dog has already attacked my other cat, Caspurr, and I especially worry about my oldest cat, Mollie; I fear if the dog got a good hold of his neck that he wouldn't have a chance.

Is there any way I can subdue the dog? She currently sleeps in a cage during the day, but my mom lets her out at night, and it's during her freedom that she does this. It is not a frequent thing, which is good...but I don't like when she does that to my cats.

You need to keep them separated to prevent serious injury to both the dog and the cats. Either gate the cats in one part of the house or lock them in a room when the dog is loose.

LinZ, this is a serious problem and I think you know that. YOU are responsible if the dog harms any of the cats.

Your dog needs specific training, and you need to be committed to getting it for her. You are fully aware of the consequences if you or your mother allow this to continue.

How fair is that to your cats??? Surely you know that a dog's jaws and shaking a cat in it's jaws can kill him/her....even biting or snarling or chasing a cat is unacceptable, it's your responsibility to get the dog trained immediately and to keep the pets seperated at all times, you need to also supervise them if they are allowed together.
