Yesterday I came up from the basement and spotted the dog gnawing on something that was not a rawhide or one of her toys - somehow she had found a pear somewhere and had eaten most of it (I assume one of the cats knocked it off the kitchen table).
I tried to pull it awa from her, but she growled and snapped at me. Finally I gave her a slice of turkey and got it out of her teeth; she did not eat the seeds or the core - only the flesh of the fruit.
.................
I can't think of why they would be, but are pears harmful to dogs? And when I say "harmful", I mean will she face greater complications than diarrhea or constipation?

Re: Dogs and pears
To my knowledge, there is nothing in a pear that is harmful to dogs. I've fed mine pieces of pear and other fruits for years without any problems. If anyone knows something different, I hope they'll post.

Re: Dogs and pears
i agree with K9, in 45 years i never had to treat a dog for a pear intoxication...i suspect she just liked it and it should do no harm.....
Re: Dogs and pears
My mom has a hear tree in her yard...every year when the pears fall, her dogs have been laying under the tree gnawing away at ripened pears...they never seemed them worse for wear...and mmmmm...those pears are sure good!!

Re: Dogs and pears
I'm glad to hear that pears are safe. I just thought it was a little bizarre that a dog, a natural carnivore, would actually enjoy a fruit. Oh well, dogs can be quirky I suppose ^-^

Thanks very much for your advice guys. I feel relieved now knowing I can rest easily if the dog manages to get her mouth on another pear.
