How do you train a pup not to chase livestock? We have a coonhound mix pup, nearly 5 months old. He started off fine but now that he realizes chickens are "fun" to chase, he doesn't seem to want to listen?
How do you train one to get used to a leash, other than using it constantly? He twists and turns and jumps with it on. He is nearly 20 pounds so we need to get a handle on this now, before he gets really big.
How do you train one to come when called? Or to stay? We are working with him daily and have had him two weeks come Wednesday.
I believe this pup to be very smart but have selective hearing (like most males ). He spends a good deal of time in his crate and is taken out 2-3 times a day just for exercise, training and play. He gets out other times when he needs to use the bathroom. He is very loving and has very much puppy to him. I've read that coonhounds develops normally but mature slowly. Do you have any suggestions for me?
TIA
Jamie

Re: training
I suggest enrolling him in a puppy class. Check with your vet or petshops in your area for trainers, schedules for classes, etc.

Re: training
aagree with Traci--at this age the pup should at least know how to sit and stay even to keep him from r5unning ount into the street or getting into hazard positions....early traing is essential
Re: training
I agree too but at present we aren't able to get him in classes ... for different reasons. Is there some advice you can give from your experience ... pointers to help us get him on the right path?
