Vomiting--no cause known...

Post by Mom to Spoiled Bichons »

About once a week, my 3 yr old Bichons vomits. She eats Calif. Natural or Innova food with snacks as carrots, broccoli, or peeled pieces of apples.

The vet has checked her stem to stern, and cannot find why she is vomiting. Sometimes, she vomits her food about 10 mins or so after eating, and other times, it's just bile-looking, and sometimes, it has grass in it (which, of course, irritates her tummy and makes her barf).

Any ideas? This is my first Bichon...are they barf-o-rama dogs??? She is spoiled because she is loved and adored and has her own special bed and wonderful toys and loves to play.

I haven't heard anything about Bichons being prone to this, but I'm not real familiar with the breed.

Some thoughts:
If it's coming up quickly after eating, she could be eating too much too fast or drinking too much water right before or after she eats. Water will cause the food to swell in the stomach, and if it swells too much, there is only one direction it can go. She could also be too active right after eating. One of my dogs did this if she got overheated right after eating.

The bile-like stuff is probably 'empty stomach syndrome'. When the stomach is empty, the gastric juices can irritate the stomach, and up they come. Try feeding her 2 or 3 smaller meals throughout the day instead of only one. If too much in the stomach is involved (thought #1), this will also solve that problem. This is not uncommon. One of my Shelties has this problem.

The grass - yep, irritates, and from what I understand, there is no evidence to support the urban legend that dogs eat grass to soothe their stomachs. The just do it because they are dogs.

These thoughts only apply if it happens occasionally and there are no other symptoms (blood in the vomitus, diarrhea, fever, etc.). If there are any other symptoms, this could be a sign of something serious and you should have your vet try again, or take her to a specialist.

if its within ten minutes of eatiung then if=t is gastric in origin...how but trying feeding small amounts of periods ofd time just for the effect...puppie will do this with an acid/base challange to the stomach but never heard of it in older dogs...try periodic small feedings....

FYI ---

I have known dogs that did that also. A cause was never found, but the dogs managed to live long happy lives. .....
