Another incontinence question

Post by CJ's Mom »

My dobie mix, CJ, has had spayed urinary incontinence for 5 years now (she's 6 years old). We had her on PPA but she apparently built up a tolerance to it and that no longer controls her leaking.
Last fall, I talked with my vet and we decided to try estrogen. He gave her .25CC injection. That controlled her leaking for over 5 months but the first month she went into "heat" and was miserable.

A couple weeks ago, she started leaking again so I talked with me vet about DES. He told me that it was no longer available in our area (MN). After looking at our alternatives, we decided to try a lower dose (.10CC) to see if we could control the leaking without putting her in heat.

Well, not only is she showing signs of estrus (swollen, whinning, etc.) but there is also some sort of discharge (can't tell for sure if it's urine or not).

I'm at my wits end. I've consulted with a different vet who practices both allopathic and homeopathic and he is not confident that he could do anything for us.

I don't know what else we can do. My regular vet did mention something about some alterative estrogens but he doesn't have any experience with them and since Cj seems to be very sensitive to meds, he doesn't really want to start experiementing with her.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Just a little more info.

First, we have checked her for UTI which came back clear. We also, had a full blood panel done to check her liver and kidney functions which also came back fine.

Plus, I just read the thread about "Leaks No more" and we tried that a few years ago. It helped but didn't fully control the leaking.

Hi, CJ's Mom,

Long time, no 'see'! Anyway, sorry to hear that CJ's leakage is recurring. Samantha, my 9yr old border collie, is also incontinent, and was on a high, (110 mg 2x/day) of PPA. She was having a lot of restlessness and panting, and I decided to try to at least lower the dosage.

I started giving her 300 mg cranberry extract 2x/day. Did that for a week, then lowered her PPA by about a third, down to 75 mg 2x/day. Went for a week with no leakage, while continuing the cranberry. Yesterday, I lowered her dosage down to 37.5 mg 2x/day. I think she was leaking a little bit, but will continue with this for a few more days and see. Her restlessness and panting are noticeably reduced.

I think the cranberry is somehow helping her bladder. She too has been tested several times for UTI, and always came back negative, but it seems that the cranberry is working. Perhaps this is soemthing that might help CJ, not fix, but help.

Do you still have my email address? It's the same one I've always had.
Email me privately, if you like.

Best of luck! I know how distressing this can be.

Hello!

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check out the cranberry extract. I assume you get it at a health food store?

Cj does get that panty, restless thing too. I feel so bad for all the side affects she gets from all the meds which makes this even harder. If a supplement like Cranberry will help, I'm willing to give it a shot.

Other than the leaking, Cj and Molly are both doing great.

Thanks again and great to hear from you.
