I have a 7lb chihuahua who was on revolution until I took him off it because he was acting very strangely for hours afterwards. I am pretty sure it was burning him. Now I am unsure what to do to prevent heartworm because I have heard that the same medication that is in Revolution is also in Heartguard. (Selamectin and Ivermectin belonging in the same family of meds).
Does anyone know of an alternative that isnt so harsh? How about Interceptor? That one has Milbemycin, but I dont know if that is any better. I am going to put him on Advantage, but not sure what to use in conjunction for the heartworm. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If the reaction was to a topical, I would think you could try either of the oral monthy preventatives.

Oh really? I just assumed I would get the same reaction. Maybe I will try that. What do you think is the best for flea control and heartworm? Like I said, I was thinking about advantage and then maybe HeartGuard. Do you know if Frontline is a better product?

It depends on what you need. For ticks, I really like Frontline. If you only have fleas, Advantage does a great job.
In the past, I have always used Frontline and Interceptor. I usually got away with using the Frontline only during tick season and then every 2-3 months with it still being affective. Now I use just Revolution because that is the safest with the type of liver disease that my dogs have.
How do you know what in the Revolution the dog reacted to? Have you discussed this with your vet?

Well, my vet said that Selmectin is the active ingredient in Revolution and that it is a stong insecticide. He said it is fine to use, but some animals do have a reaction from it. Both my cats are still on it and i've watched them carefully, but they seem to be fine after application. Since I have posted, I've decided to go with Interceptor too. Apparently it also controls roundworms, hookworms and whipworms, so the more the better. One other thing though (sorry, I'm a worrywort when it comes to my dog) originally I was in the thinking that I didnt have to worry about ticks because my chihuahua is almost bald, so I would see a tick a mile away, but now I am wondering if the damage would already be done once the tick is on him. I dont know much about ticks. Would he be okay if the tick was removed soon after? I would rather go with Advantage because my vet said Advantage was the mildest on the market for sensitive animals, but I will try Frontline if I need to. Know much about ticks and when they transmit disease?

Do you have a major tick problem? I believe a tick needs to be attached for 24 hours to transmit a tick borne disease, but maybe somebody else could chime in here.
If the dog is short haired, you can run a lint-roller over them when they come in.

I have done a little research myself on topical fea/tick applications as my Papillion Tuffy has a problem with Premetherin (sp) which is often an ingredient in these applications for tick control. She is obviously distressed if I use anything with that stuff in it, she itches and twitches in the area I have applied it too. Frontline does not use Premetherin so I have had good luck using that on her. Advantage is for Flea control only (as previously mentioned) and I have used it on Tuffy with no ill effects either, but it also does not contain Premetherin. I tried K9-Advantix which is for fleas and ticks and I can't use it on her (it has that stuff in it). So I guess I will be sticking to Frontline.
Oh and my short haired Chihuahua also had a tick, but it was all ready attached and filling up by the time I discovered it. It was a bit hard to get off and the big problem with removing them is leaving their heads embedded in the dog. The tick can also "puke" their insides into the bite site while you are trying to remove them too, which means, if they have any disease your dog will now be infected four sure. They are just basically nasty and you should avoid getting them at all cost as it's not worth the risk. Here in Tennessee we have a big flea and tick population so I can't go without the repellant, but it depends on where you live just how much of a problem ticks will be. When I lived in Ontario, Canada, I never even used tick repellant just flea stuff.
