Re: Mr. Blue has a new skin problem, and the vet is stumped
Thanks Traci and K9Karen...now it's time for questions from the master/mistress of basic ones (ie, me!) You mentioned Vit. E oil. I have a great moisturizing Vit E cream I use for my own dry skin. It really helps keep my eczema "hot spots" from flaring up. Can I use this on Mr. Blue, or should I look specifically for an oil? Second question: how much of the Vitamin E from an oil or a cream absorbed internally? The reason I'm asking is because I know Vit E is one of those things I definitely don't want to give him too much of, and the vet said to give him 200 mg. twice a day. Do I need to calculate a skin treatment product into that, or won't that matter? Wow, I feel pretty stupid right now asking that, but I honestly don't know the answer! My mother has told me that if I took as careful care of myself as I do of Mr. Blue, I'd be the healthiest woman in the state!

When I want to treat a skin problem, I use a pin to make a hole in a vit E capsule, and squeeze the contents onto the skin. Also, I`ve taken 1600 iu of vit E orally, daily, with no problem. Skin application isn`t going to cause an overdose. imo

I wouldn't worry about absorption through the skin, it is only a topical application, all you need is a dab.
Breaking open capsules are fine, you can also find small vials of vitamin e at your pharmacy, it keeps forever and has many uses.
I wouldn't use human lotion, it probably contains other ingredients too harsh for Mr Blue, or those that are uneccessary, like fragrances, etc.
