Athen swallowed raw hide

Athena went to the vet. Her Xrays show no obvious obstruction. Yeah!! Athen fixed herself. She worked hard all day to get it up.

Her esophagus is very tender from coughing and throwing up a huge rolled up piece of raw hide. She got Cimetadine and some pills to suppress her cough, which is probably from the irritation. She was NPO for 24 hours and now I am supposed to cook rice and give it with Gerber baby food chicken and cottage cheese. Is this a bit extreme for diet? Why not give her her usual ultra premium chicken and rice dog food in the canned form instead of nuggets?

give the extreme diet, your vet may be more familar with that than other diets and a day or so can't hurt

Your vet was thinking of her gastric sensitivity...dogs who vomit or retch excessively, then are withheld food, need a bland diet to start out with again once food is introduced after the event. What your vet has advised will be easy on her stomach and intestines,...in another day or so, gradually introduce her normal food.

Athena is starving on the bland cottage cheese, rice, and Gerber chicken diet. She is begging for food. Poor baby.

It was awful sitting and waiting in the vet's examining room. Altogether we were at the vet's for two hours. It brought back memories of sitting and waiting in the vet's examining room for all those many, many tests that were done on Magnum. Poor baby. All those work-ups didn't do him one bit of good.

I hope my little Athena stays young and healthy for a long time.

So glad Athena is ok...I'm sure that has happened to many dog owners- when you dog grabs something outside and tries to scarf it down- happened to me also, but was able to stop her.
Anyway- thank goodness she is ok now!

She's probably begging because she really likes it, not that she's starving. Can't blame her, I don't know any dogs who don't love that stuff better than their regular food, even good kibble. Heck, it's human food! My dogs usually go nuts for it even when they're refusing everything else. For a few days, it's better to be safe than sorry.
