Would you give this to a dog off his feed?...msg

Post by LM »

Copper's not eaten yesterday's breakfast or dinner, nor today's breakfast. Nothing obvious, no drooling, gums are a good color, eyes normal, he's pooping ok, drinking water ok, temp last night was 101.3. My vet's last appt on wednesdays is in 10 mins (he closes early on wednesdays and this isn't an emergency), or I'd take him in. Unless he eats tonight's dinner, he'll go in tomorrow.

Usually I would give them some chicken and rice if they doesn't eat for a day. But with the strikes, shopping is a problem. I was wondering if I could give him Leilah's food, he's had it before with no problem, so I know it won't set off any allergies or anything.

It's 50% chicken, 50% broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, and a little bit of canned pumpkin. All cooked. Is this bland enough for a dog off his feed? If not, then I'll have to cross the picket lines.

Mom to the rescue! Seems she stocked up on frozen chicken pieces before the strike and is willing to donate to my cause. If Copper's gonna eat at all, he'll eat well tonight. He did have some diarrhea (sp?) this morning, color's normal anyway except a bit of mucus too. So I think it's something irritating his lower GI. Thank goodness I trimmed his hind end before that. He's gotten into nothing unusual that I can tell at least.

I did finally reach my vet, the couple hours it often takes for him to call back always seems way too long. He says that since Copper really likes Leilah's food, it would definitely be worth a shot to give it to him if he won't take chicken and rice. Also kaopectate, the new formula should still be fine for this. If that doesn't work, I'm to try some premade rotisserie chicken or KFC with the breading crap taken off. I guess in his experience, sick dogs usually really like those secret herbs and spices? If THAT don't work, he's really sick. I told the vet to make sure to check his machine in the morning for a late night call from me. I often leave 1am messages for him when something's going on, then they can call me back and wake me up. Works well for us anyway.

Cross your fingers that whatever it is goes away real quick!

i have never seen a normal healthy dog that goes off its feed to starve to death, suicide is not a canine option as long as they are healthy. i used to tell clients to put the food down for ten minutes then pick it up...anxiety prevails and so does the appetite.....again if they are normal and healthy

Copper refusing 3 meals in a row is not normal and healthy for him at all. Not since I first got him has he refused this much food (and that was an unbelieveably miserable time for all of us). He's not usually fussy unless it involves peanut butter and he's been fine with this diet for over a year now. He had diarrhea again while I was at work, and while it's real hard to tell in the middle of the night even with a good flashlight, there may be a teeny bit of blood in it. I'll know more in the morning.

He did clean up the chicken and rice tonight, and my mom was quite thrilled that he likes her cooking, LOL.

I have found that a few tablespoons of cottage cheese work well to settle a tummy upset and get Win eating "regular" again, but don't know what vets think of that or if most dogs believe cottage cheese to be a special treat, as mine does...

Aren't you on the West Coast? What is the strike about? I have been engrossed [especially the 'grossed' part] in local and personal concerns, so haven't been watching national news as carefully as I usually do. Anyhow, hope Copper is well now.

Leilah LOVES her cottage cheese! She gets some every night. Copper was still eating cookies, so he'd have probably eaten that if I offered it. He's not had any diarrhea since I gave him the kaopectate, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he's getting better.

The 4 main supermarket chains here are all on strike. They all honor the same contract. The union went to strike one chain, and then the other three locked out the workers. So, all four are on strike now. The markets want the workers to pay part of the heath care, and freeze pensions, while they're making record profits. They're claiming competition from walmart as the reason for the cuts. Since there's only 2 or 3 Walmarts in all of Los Angeles and none sell groceries, it's kind of a stupid claim. In the meantime, I'm pretty much living out of 7-11. And I've found that the picket lines are major schmooze fests for Leilah, LOL.

Just an update....

Copper's blood work came back good. Xrays yesterday showed lots of gas, but no probably blockage, and an odd spot in his stomach. Vet felt him up inside and out, no pain, nothing unusual. But with his very high pain threshold, it would have to be real bad for him to flinch. Something is definitely going on, but can't tell what. So, he'll be on tagamet and flagyl for a bit. Xrays today were a big improvement and definitely no blockage, the odd spot was apparantly a bit of his liver showing up wierd.

Last two meals were plain chicken whoppers with a bit of maple syrup (I still hadn't gotten to the market, but will be going in a few minutes). He's still refusing kibble, but he's not refusing chicken. While there was definitely something wrong that started this, he's definitely better now and now could be trying to hold out for the "doggie comfort food". Manupulative brat! Once he's done with the diarrhea, I'll address that. In the meantime, I'll offer him kibble with chicken and rice.
