Joints cracking--is this potentially serious?
I have a question about Carter, my 4 year old lab. Sometimes, when he gets up from sleeping, his joints crack. I can't tell if it's his front or back legs, hips, elbows, etc. Is this normal? He is not overweight and is otherwise healthy. I have seen no signs of arthritis or mobility problems. I have had him on a Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement for preventative measures. I don't want to ignore it if it may be a symptom of something serious. Anyone else's dog have this problem? Thanks!

If this is an obvious "crackling", don't delay in getting your dog to your vet promptly for an exam and x-rays to rule out problems (i.e, hip displaysia, cruciate/ligament rupture, etc). If you haven't had him examined within the last year, now is the time to do so.

I agree with Traci - get the vet to check him over. My Angel "cracks" sometimes when I pick her up - she has very severe hip dysplasia. I can't hear anything when she gets up, only when I pick her up. If you can hear it, it needs to be checked ASAP.

Re: Joints cracking--is this potentially serious?
He has been to the vet a short time ago for his annual exam, but wasn't having this problem then. We are going back this weekend to talk to the vet about it. Thanks for the advice.
The more I have been observing it, the more I think it is coming from the front end--possibly his elbow? I'd like to have x-rays done to check him out.

Could be a problem with the elbow, but most dysplaysias usually occur in the hips, ligaments and cruciates in the rear legs (k-9's such as bassets, on the otherhand, do have problems with forelegs). Do get x-rays during your appointment, they are essential in diagnosing.

just for the expansion of worldly knowledge but the crackling you hear in your fingers when you stretch them back are nitrogen bubbles poping,,,,the older you get the less you pop---however a 4 year old dog should not, but occaisionally do, pop but still an xray might not be a bad idea...
