Yikes big PARVO scare...

Post by momPaws »

Just heard on TV that one big animal shelter around her is closed due to parvo- should I worry about taking my dog out for walks where other dogs have been for a while. Since she is a senior my vet and I agreed to only give her shot every other yr. ...skipped this yr. Never ever heard of a shelter around her closing because of that! K9K and Traci what do you think?

Oh dear! I too will be waiting to hear... `Eowyn and Q had all their shots early this year. There were no other cats in the small shelter facility so [wisely considering Q would have vanished forever and his collar/tags were fastened to the carrier rather than on his neck] the shelter officer did not take him out of his carrier... But 'Win spent 18 hours in the one room with about 2 dozen poor dogs [heartbreaking - I admire Mr. and Mrs. Skeptic even more  ] separated only by wire mesh...

The slightest sneeze (late summer allergies) or little cough because she gets one of her own hairs in her throat scares me to pieces now... so I know how you feel. My impression (but I'm not certain) is that Parvo strikes mainly those dogs which have never been innoculated against it. Thanks for posting - you will be in my thoughts.

Mompaws, this is strictly my opinion, but I'm not sure it's necessary to vaccinate just yet. If she has been current and up-to-date til last year, chances are, she has developed an immunity. I would worry if she was immunocompromised with a health condition, but other than that, adult dogs with an up-to-date vaccination history rarely develop serious signs of parvo, unless again they are compromised with a health condition or immunological disorder (and for those adults who have never been vaccinated)

Base your decisions on the locale, risk factor and Honey's health status. If you're concerned, ask your vet what he is currently doing for his clients with senior dogs who have been up-to-date on vaccinations.

Dot- hope you animals are ok...and that you are feeling ok, too. I know that after an accident I was shaken for a while and having bad dreams.
Traci- thanks..may call vet or just be careful where I walk her.
Coming home - on the radio they said same shelter had prob. with cats spreading distemper there also and anyone who recently got pet there to watch it and take to vet if sick. The are disinfecting shelter. This is a well respected shelter...it happens I guess.

My boyfriend and I adopted a 4 month old puppy from the pound. 3 days later she came down with either Parvo or Distemper. We had to have her PTS. It was the hardest thing my boyfriend ever had to do. It was HEARTBREAKING...

We did not have the $350-$500+ for Parvo treatment w/no guarntee of recovery and for puppies, Distemper is fatal.

I did extenstive research on the web. Parvo can linger outside on the grass for 5-7 months if the infected dog was there. It's a nasty virus. I would avoid any area where contact can be made just to be on the safe side.
