Update on Shannon

Post by Peg »

Hello all,

Well, I finally made that decision. We had so many tests done on Shannon and all systems were a go so she was given the I-131 on Tuesday. She is waiting out her four days of confinement and is very indignant to be caged but she is doing quite well. She's eating and using her little and growling at everyone! Her numbers are coming down steadily so she is still clear to come home Saturday. They will test her thyroid in six months, but I will have it tested at our vet long before that! I can't wait until she's home again. Thanks to all of you for helping me through this. I really appreciate it. ((((HUGS))))

With pleasure! I have to wait two weeks to hug her but I will definitely give her a scratch for everybody and then wash my hands! She doesn't need to be locked away when she comes home but will need to be in the cage as she isn't supposed to be on the furniture or in our beds, but she will be home and that is all I need. I'm sure you all know how much I miss her.

She's Home!

Shannon came out of the hospital unit just screaming! Howling!! They put the carrier on the table and I put my head there and she started talking like she was either happy to see me or scolding me for leaving her there! She was very quiet in the car coming home. She was rubbing on the carrier because it was finally something she knew! She's not happy to be in another cage but she's sitting in her bed and has had a nice drink of water, a few treats and is she ever talking! It's so good to have her home.

We have an appointment for Feb. 7th for her follow-up. They'll check her T4 and give her another echocardiagram to make sure the thyroid is responding and the heart murmur is subsiding. She was an excellent candidate and they don't expect any problems. It's a 98% cure for the HyperT.

The rules aren't so bad. She can share a room with us but not be on the furniture or in our bed. We can pet her but must wash our hands immediately. We're not suppose to let her lick us, we can't kiss her, and we can't touch her feet (she walks in the litter) and because she groooms. The Radioactivity secretes in the saliva. We have to bag and store the litter and feces for two weeks. We're all set up to do that. SHE'S HOME!

Don't forget to wear gloves when scooping litter waste or changing the litterbox...latex or kitchen gloves will work fine.

I'm thrilled to hear she is finally home with you, I know you are relieved she is home and feeling so much better! So, at the end of two weeks, kiss her for me, ok? ok? ok?

Good girl, Shannon, you make your mommy proud! :P

I definitely will kiss her for everybody. Shannon is doing well now that we moved the cage to the front windows so she can look out. No more howling. We're all getting more sleep. She's eating well and being very tolerant. I do use gloves with the litter and have a special can in the basement to store it for two weeks. We use ziplock bags and then put it in a garbage bag in the bucket. We never touch any of it. She's allowed to be in the same room with us and we are allowed to pet her but must wash our hands after.

Hi, all,

We made it! Today is the big day! Shannon is a free soul again. I took the litter and her food dishes out of the cage and set everything up in her old spots. Then I put the cage on the floor, got the camera, and opened the door. She was a blur! SO I hope I got a picture of her coming out of the cage. The first place she went was to her spot in the kitchen to get her food, then visited her real litter box, and then (and yet!) she is asleep in my bed! Her same old routine...never missed a beat! Yes, I got my hug! She's free! Yeeaaaah!
