Hello,
Just asking for a little prayer for Shannon. We are seeing the radiologist to see if Shannon is a good candidate for the I-131 tomorrow. Has anyone been through the I-131 treatment?

Re: Shannon
I know of humans who have (and things came out fine), but never a critter, but I would assume that results would be similar...
Traci or davet can probably give you the medical details...all I can do is give you prayers that all goes well...

Re: Shannon
Providing the patient is a good candidate for radioiodine therapy (i.e., otherwise healthy, no other conditions present, etc), radioiodine therapy is probably the best option, since it is usually curative. Your vet or the specialist can tell you in more detail what to expect. The hardest part is most likely the time of seperation from your pet, but is necessary.
I hope everything goes smoothly, and Shannon remains in my thoughts and prayers, hang in there, Peg!

Traci,
Shannon's tests results came back fine (no heart disease other than the murmer, OK kidney function) and she is able to balance her urine. I'm not sure what that means. Are her kidneys OK to do the I-131? Going with it may induce kidney failure and I do not want that either. Still agonizing over the decision. I have a tentative date of January 9th for the treatment. Thanks.

Re: Shannon
Your vet probably meant Shannon was able to concentrate her urine, or that urine function was normal (normal storage, voiding, etc).
If her kidney function is optimal, this is a good indication she is a good candidate for radioiodine treatment. Oftentimes, when hyperthyroidism is present, it can go hand in hand with renal disease, but this can happen with any primary or secondary condition, so it's good that her renal function is optimal.
Talk to the radioiodine vet, he can calm your fears and answer your questions. As long as your primary vet and the radioiodine vet are in regular communication regarding Shannon's treatment, you have a good vet team behind you for her care.

Re: Shannon
Thank you, Traci. December 16 her Bun was 18. mg/dL and her creatine was 1.1 mg/dL. The only negative on her bloodwork was the liver enzymes consistent with the thyroid condition. I don't have numbers on the urine test. The vet called me yesterday and said it was fine. I called today for clarification and she said if it was her cat she'd treat it but I could go back to oral suspensions to try if I wanted. They are recommending the I-131 but not forcing me into it.
