Sarah said I should write an update on Jasmine, our black dog who was the first adopted from Forget Me Not. She passed away in the wee hours of the morning, sleeping on the foot of our bed, doing what she did best, taking care of her people. Doris diagnosed her with congestive heart failure and a respiratory infection in mid-October. She got better after that (with antibiotics and diuretics) and had several weeks with happy, tail-wagging days. Yesterday morning she seemed to be breathing a bit deeply and we gave her her pill. Last night she seemed worse and I decided I'd take her to the vet this morning, but she couldn't hold on that long. She was the perfect dog for us -- a perfect fit.
Jasmine spent her days at home protecting the rabbits and cats she shared space with and watching over us. Her last trip was to Whidbey Island when we hosted a baby shower for our daughter last month. (Ironically, the new grandbaby was born yesterday.) Jasmine loved to go for long rides and was perfectly behaved in hotel rooms. She was also eager to stay at home with her humans and didn't leave the property unless we took her. When we were in town, we put the required leash on her, but at home she was rarely out of sight and always came when she was called. When I was gone for the day she would be waiting in the driveway for me when I returned. (Ron said she would hear the truck and demand to go out.) She slept on the foot of our bed, her favorite place unless we weren't there and she was able to rest her head on a pillow. Last summer we bought a patio set which we put in a nice shady spot and she claimed one chair as her outside resting spot. She quickly learned to "shake hands" for a treat and became a comic relief when we were cooking steaks and she offered us her paw. We rarely left her alone. She was always eager to go for a ride with us. The back seat in our pickup was her other place. She got very excited when she saw us pack her travel bowls, toys and leash for a road trip. When we couldn't take her with us, she stayed with her best friend Joey and "Aunt" Sarah. She loved going there too, and got noticeably excited when she saw we were approaching Sarah's house.
We often said Jasmine was the best dog that ever owned us. We were always aware of how special she was and wondered how anyone could ever have neglected her. We provided her third home. The first two were not so great, apparently. She had many human friends, and she brought a smile to each of them. She came to us in the summer of 2004, when she was two-and-a-half years old. We met several dogs that day and felt from the very beginning that she was special. Unfortunately, her life was short (even in dog years). But she brought much joy to our lives in the three-and-a-half years she spent with us.
So that is Jasmine's story -- painfully short, but her last years were happy.
