Fur loss

Post by suncats »

I just noticed my 1 year old cat has an area on the inside of his front leg ("armpit" area) where fur is missing. It is about the size of a quarter and the skin looks smooth.

He and my 6 year old cat play and wrestle alot, but it doesn't look like the skin was abraded at all. It looks like hair has fallen out to me, much like alopecia in humans. He is an indoor only cat with no other health issues. It doesn't appear to hurt him. Any ideas and should I be concerned?

I had the same thing happen to Riley when he was about a year only the spot was behind a hind leg. At first I thought he was chewing it away but the vet confirmed an allergy (I can't remember the name, sorry) that young cats sometimes get. She gave him a shot of cortisone (something I'm not fond of and don't do often) but it worked and the area filled in nicely and the problem hasn't recurred.

Have your vet check it out to rule out anything serious. It could be something as simple as an allergy. Then again, we can't diagnose on the board here, we can only give advice.

Is the area sore at all when you touch it?

Let us know what the vet says.

Even if the area isnt inflammed or swollen you should have vet check it out just in case. Like cloe said there could be an allergy, there are some health issues that due cause hair to fall out or it may be nothing. Either way the vet will be able to help. :)
