collecting feline urine sample
collecting feline urine sample
I have found a way to collect a urine sample from a cat that is still using his litter box. Buy a bag of dried peas. Wash litter box with hot water and soap and dry. Place dried peas in it. When cat uses the box, have a plastic bag ready, pour contents into plastic bag. Have a container ready and pierce a hole in the corner of the bag and urine will empty into container. If not using litter box, I put sheets of aluminum foil in the corners of the rooms and collect it that way.
8year neutered male cat, Molson, history of FLUT controlled with diet. Since December three occasions of FLUT. Antibiotics and diet clear it up, then it returns. Husband had stroke in December and has been home since, any thoughts on a connection?

I'm not sure I'd recommend the dried peas, for one thing, if urine is mixed with them, you might get an increased amount of protein in the urinalysis. Of course you can ask your vet about that. In any event, you can get non-absorbing crystals from him to use when collecting urine.
As for the FLUTD and related stress, yes, stress can exacerbate FLUTD tremendously, so try to minimize kitty's stress and the environment at all times.
If kitty is susceptible to frequent problems related to the FLUTD, seek another opinion and make certain all other related conditions are ruled out (misdiagnosis of crystals, for example, incorrect diet, discuss with your vet an acidifying diet or a supplement to use with a non-acidifying diet. Also, if the problem is frequently severe, and has a history of blockages, make sure your vet opts for you a contrast study, and has ruled out bladder inflammation, other types of crystals, etc)
