outdoor cat containment

Post by lhammers »

Hello! I'm new to this board and own 2 dogs. There is a very thin stray kitten (maybe a few months old) that has come around our house that I fed a few days ago. Of course, it has continued to visit and actually gets along with our dogs. I would like to take it to our vet to have it checked for worms, get vaccines, spay/neuter etc. and would not mind it living in our yard. The problem is, I do not want a full-time indoor cat but I don't think it is ethical to let it roam the neighborhood where it could get run over or go into my neighbor's yard who is allergic to cats (it has tried to get into her house several times and she can't touch it or she'll get sick). Has anyone had any luck with an underground or wireless containment system on a cat? I hate to take it to a shelter when we could take this cat. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are referring to an electronic containment system, this would be non-productive entirely, and is only designed for dogs.

The best thing you can do for this kitten is find him a loving, caring home (NOT through a shelter), ask your vet for resources he may be able to help with for finding him a home. The outdoor hazards are just too numerous.

You should also take steps to ensure the kitten may be already owned by someone in your neighborhood...post flyers, a lost & found ad in your paper, etc.
