Please before you fall out of your chairs laughing after you read this question..........let me assure you that i looked just like this when my neighbor told me of this so i am ready for all the laughter......so with that i was told there was a "shot that can keep a cat from going into heat its like birth control for cats"..........ok i will let the laughter go........is this one of her "alien" theroies or has anyone heard of such a thing.
I have a cat and never heard of such a thing. I told her to get the cat spaded that was the only way. She said she can't afford it and we dont have any place here that does them for free.........trust me i have looked and looked for her.
Ok there it is.......glad i could bring some laughter to your day.

Well, not entirely sure what your friend is talking about, but there has always been research into 'birth control' for cats...whether they are effective or productive measures, there isn't enough research or data to support it thus far. Even if birth control products were available, they would not prevent common problems and diseases which can be the result of not spaying or neutering. (pyometra, uterine cancer, mammary cancer, testicular cancer, etc). So, try to convince her that spaying/neutering is the best option all around.
Love Your Pets - Spay and Neuter.
As for reduced costs of spaying and neutering, almost every community has a vet or organization who will have a spay/neuter clinic event for the community. Some shelters require it before adoption, and some vets will spay/neuter with a valid voucher from the shelter. My advise is use a small animal vet's services, because with a spay/neuter clinic, you cannot guarantee monitoring after anesthesia, followup care should there be problems with recovery, etc. A primary vet will provide these options and your pet's safety is paramount.
I think most of us would agree with the statement...if you can't afford to spay and neuter, let alone exams and regular veterinary care, then one should not have a pet. Pet ownership is a responsibility and a priveledge, where the pet is dependant on the owner to do right by them.

While I was looking for spaying information in the internet a while back I saw a mention of a feline birth control drug like you mentioned that is available only in Europe. Sorry I don;t remember where I saw this information. So maybe that is what your neighbor was thinking of ...
But I doubt that the ongoing costs of any shot / drug would be cheaper in the long run. She should just start saving her money.
And keep her eyes open, once a year our Anti-Cruelty Society does a $10 spay clinic. You have to register quick before the slots fill up but they do it every year.

Some vets, if you explain your financial situation, will agree to perform spaying at a reduced cost. Most vets take credit cards, although I'm not encouraging overspending on plastic. Otherwise, your friend could try to work out some kind of a payment plan with the vet, with some money down and an agreed amount each month. Maybe she could hold a garage sale or find another way to raise the money to do it. Sometimes if you call the local ASPCA or shelter, they can recommend a vet who does spaying and neutering at reduced costs. I would also ask at local pet stores if they know of someone. Some of the big chains like Petco and PetSmart have adoption organizations that they work with and I'm sure they would have vets who would work with your friend to get it done. Good luck!

i am not sure but i think depoprovera was used for that, at least in dogs but due to the potential adverse reactions (pyometra) it was removed from the veterinary line...but, in the FDA"s wonderfall thinking it was kept on for humans.....

Re: This will sound dumb but.........
Thank you all for the replies and i have passed on this info to my neighbor and told her that its just best to have the cat spaded. Her birthday is this month so i think for that day i will take her cat in and have it spaded. I called today and its going to cost $400.00 to have the cat have its updated shots and to be spaded. Oh well since i have hunter i know it cost to have a pet but i encouraged her to find a local small vet. They do not have a vet at the local shelters here so that was the reason she had not had the money to have the cat spaded.
Again thank you all for your input.
