Problem with cats pooping on floor.

Post by Daniel Maxwell »

Hi all, I have had an ongoing problem with our 6 month old cat, Havok. Since we got her, she will only use her box about 1/2 of the time...and we keep it totally clean and fresh. Usually, she will poop about 3 feet from her box, or sometimes right next to it! Oddly, she will only pee in her box.

To add to the problems, we recently got a pair of kittens, a brother and sister. They now seem to think it's ok to go anywhere, whereas before they would only go in the box...this is scary as I dont want to get rid of any of thw cats in question.

Havok seems to KNOW she's not suppsted to do it, but this isnt seemig to be her just acting out.. .. like I say, its been from day 1.

When my Mini cat got older and her kidneys were not up to par (they were only border-line bad) she got fussy about her box. I ended up giving her a second box placed right next to the first. She used one for liquids and the other for solids. Very odd, but she never had another accident after that even in her last terribly weak days. It may be harder with more than one cat to give her this option, but heck, it is worth a try.

I agree, a second box would be ideal...rule of thumb is one box per cat, so adding one or two more litterboxes may resolve the problem. Keep them in a private area, away from heavy traffic, and cleaned/scooped on a daily basis.

My kitten seemed to miss the box a few times when he pooped. I thought it was intentional until I witnessed him once straining to move his bowels. He was only able to get about half out and the rest fell on the floor next to the box. I am not a vet and don't know how much about cat nutrition, but perhaps Havok is constipated and needs a dietary change.
