She's gone into heat ...

I have never had a non-neutered female cat before and don't know quite what to do. Any suggestions?

I adopted a stray who turned out to be pregnant. I now have mom and 4 adorable 6 week old kittens. The kittens are primarily weaned but still nurse a few times per day, mostly for comfort and bonding and never more than a couple minutes at a time. I was planning on getting Mom neutered as soon as the kittens leave for their adoptive homes.

But, Mom went into heat last night. Calling out all night and shaking her booty like they do. It kept both me and the kittens awake most of the night. The books I have read say this could go on for a couple weeks.

Is there any thing I can do to shorten this cycle? Should I just make the neutering appointment as soon as possible?
