Took cat to vet today. Was told cat had impacted anal sac(s) which is why cat was excessively licking booty for last couple days. HOWEVER, after doing some online research regarding this issue... I remain confused why the vet insisted surgery was required as opposed to just "expressing" the fluid manually. Since the cat had only been showing signs of discomfort for the last 2 days, I find it hard to believe the problem had escalated to such a level that surgery would be required!! I hate to say I feel the vet took financial advantage of the situation knowing I would do anything to make my cat well. If anyone has any thoughts or can update me with the going rate for this type of proceedure, please contact me immediately.

Re: Diagnosis of the bum licking cat
Hi,
I'm glad you took her to the vets and that it is only an anal gland problem. Generally dogs have to have theirs expressedmuch more often than cats do. Some dogs even have regular scheduled vet visits for this. Cats normally don't have much of an anal gland problem so they would seldom have to have them expressed. Your kitty has only had one episode so far. Just keep an eye on her and if it happens again, and again with not much time in between, then consider surgery.
I would ask this vet why he is considering surgery so soon. I hope it will never happen again and you can avoid surgery!
