My kitty is pregnant...any advice?

Post by ArizonaLisa »

I would love any tips you have to offer on caring for a pregnant cat. Before anyone says anything about me not spaying her, I *just* adopted her from my local animal shelter on Friday. I became suspicious when I was giving her a bath and felt her nipples...very hard and large. When I examined them, they were very pink. I took her in to the vet yesterday for her checkup and the vet confirmed my suspicions...she is indeed pregnant. The vet placed her at about 4 weeks, and said she felt 2-3 kittens. I guess I will be a grandma in about 5 weeks. I don't know much about the feline pregnancy/labor process (even though I have 4 kids of my own!), so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Here is a picture of my kitty Isis...

She is really beautiful! And so lucky to have a loving home now. I wish you much happiness with Isis.

I too adopted a pregnant stray [unbeknownst to me] who gave birth very shortly after she came to live with us. I provided a box lined with a towel and put it in the closet. I noticed one morning she didn't eat. I just had a feeling that she would give birth that day -- she was acting differently. She did go into the box that day and gave birth.

However, she had some complications. As a precaution I suggest that you have the number of an emergency vet on hand. Not to worry you, but my kitty gave birth very late at night after the vet closed. I had to take her to the emergency room. I believe this is a very rare occurence, but since you mentioned that you have no experience I think it's a good idea. I had no experience either. She's perfectly fine and we kept the kitten and happily they are still very close -- four years later!!

Lots of Luck and love to you and Isis.
