older female cat urinating out side her litter box now

Post by Guest »

help my cat who is 18 started urinating outside her litter box for a couple weeks now. ive taken her to the vet and they analyzed her bood and urine all came out fine. since she is older she has developed arthritis in her back legs within the past couple years. and she also was diagnosed with spondylosis (?spelling?) im not sure if this is the problem. she is still able to jump from the floor to the couch with pretty good ease.and she is not crying or howling she knows where her litter box is because she still goes number 2 in there. but recently she stops about 3 or 4 feet from her litter box and starts urinating. almost like she can't make it in there. or dosen't want to go any further. I AM STUMPED the vet had me get her some baby asprin for her arthritis. and pepcid for her urinating problem. but its not working. someone suggested that i find a ramp for her to go up in side her box but i have had no luck. if you have read this far please consider leaving any advice you have it will be much appreciated. thank you

What is the dose of the baby aspirin he has advised you, and is there any blood in her urine? If there is any blood or she is not producing but only small amounts at a time, opt for another urinalysis to rule out developing urinary tract infection. Also ask your vet to rule out potential gastric ulcers.

If your vet by chance doesn't feel the aspirin is appropriate at this time (ineffective), ask about a temporary trial of prednisone in the event the aspirin is not working two-fold: not effective for pain and arthritic condition or may be causing ulcers.

You could be right about her not being able to reach her litterbox...so simply placing it in a more accessible area may help. Also watch her a couple times and see if she has difficulty actually stepping into it, in which, opt to get a lower box (more shallow)

By the pet ramps, did you mean you can't find them or have tried one and she isn't using it? If you can't find one, try Here, scroll to bottom for Orthopedic Supplies.
