Is my cat dying?

Post by TracieM »

I have a male cat I rescued from a shelter in 1994. At the time, they thought he was about 4 years old, but weren't sure. If that's true, he'd be about 14 years old now. He's been climbing up into the crawl spaces in our basement and pooping and peeing. We can't get in the spaces, but hooked our camera onto a pole and took pictures as we suspected something because of the strong odor. It's a total mess. We cleaned it out once as best we could with rigged up rakes, but unless we tear out the walls in our basement, we can't get it cleaned completely. Anyway, he started doing it again because we apparently didn't seal off all of the ways in. When I go to clean out his litter box, there's maybe one clump of urine and no poop. He smells terrible because he lays up in there in his own fecies. He lost his fang teeth about two years ago, and now he's really thin although he still seems to eat ok.

Why is he pooping and peeing up there and laying in it? Is that a sign that his days are numbered?

Thanking you in advance for any help you can provide.

thbat is not a sign that his days are numbered but it sure is a sign that he has something big time wrong...next time you get him, cage him and get him checked out...sounds very possibly like uremic poisoning...but get him checked

He may have been urinating there because of a possible illness suchh as urinary tract infection or kidnney disease. At his age he should be seen by your vet at least once a year with a complete geriatric blood profile. During a thorough examination, your vet will want the blood checked for kidney disease and a urinalysis based on his inappropriate elimination.
Please take davet's suggestion and have him seen by your vet. I hope he's okay and please let us know how he's doing, ok?
Kitty kisses,
Debbie

Please take kitty to the vet asap as Davet said kidney failure may be the cause of this. He is trying to tell you something, so do not delay call for an appointment immediately. Mona :(
